suits in creative industries?
Permalink Closed

Poptart's post about her suit got me thinking... I will hopefully be interviewing for internships in a couple months, and for jobs in another year for sure, so I need to give some thought to my suit situation. My industry is creative--interior design--and from what I've seen, dressy casual is the regular dress code in these places. But I'm not familiar with what would fly in an interview, especially since I am coming from a really conservative business background in terms of dress code. The one suit I currently own is conservative, but with the potential to be spiced up--it's a grey herringbone tweed pantsuit. (I know some people say you should wear a skirt suit to interviews, but frankly I wouldn't want to work for a company that disapproved of me wearing a pantsuit--I mean what decade are we?)

So basically I have two options--spice up my gray suit or get a new one. Depending on when my interviews wind up being, I may have to get a new one regardless; I obviously can't be running around in heavy wool tweed in May. Anyone in similar industries who has some sense of what would be acceptable? I definitely need to look like I am interviewing for a creative job, as opposed to a law firm... but obviously still want to look professional.

I hate wearing skirt suits to interviews...I always wonder if I have to wear stockings or if the interviewer will wrinkle up her nose at my hose since I work in the entertainment business. I've only ever owned and interviewed in a pantsuit and it has served me well. I'd never say anyone looked down on my choice to wear pants.

I think your gray suit will be perfect in the fall/winter. I'd just wear it with jewel toned tops and colorful scarves to spice up the look a bit. I'd love a few Pucci or Pucci-esque scarves to wear to interviews.

I think I said this in poptart's thread, but the best option may be to go somewhere relatively fashion forward like BCBG and look at the suits there. I like suits that have pinstripes and subtle check/herringbone patterns and almost purchased a black/coral pinstripe BCBG suit that was funky but subtle enough.

If you prefer pants, wear pants! I agree with you 100%. Fine I'll concede to wearing a suit to an interview, but it's gonna look good and be cute. I don't want to feel like I have to stifle myself in order to fit in with my office. And I definately don't want  to work for a place that would put me to the bottom of the list just becasue I wore pants- wtf?

hotcocoa, who is a graphic designer, wrote this article on dressing for interviews:

I am also in a somewhat creative role, as my creative background is utilized for reviews, etc.  Even though I am in a corporate atmosphere, I have some creative license and wear a lot of interesting accessories and pieces (jewelry, shoes, tights, bags, blouses, interesting cuts, fabrics, details, colors) - I don't wear the cookie cutter solid pants or skirt with matching jacket and a button down.
