Retirement party? What to get?
Permalink Closed

My bf's mom and her husband are retiring this year (in a couple months actually). I was wondering what to get them. Here is a little info:

My bf & I have been together 5 years and I am very friendly with them

They are retiring but then joining the Peace Corps and moving away.. so no home stuff

They love food.

They are having a big party to celebrate their retirement.

So far I am thinking about getting them custom bobble heads... I know they would really like these, but they are very expensive and I may have trouble

Well, if they love food, but are moving away and don't need extra possessions right now, how about either taking them out for a special dinner or inviting them to your house for one? (Granted, I don't know if you like to cook...)

this is a good idea but we live in different cities and i think when we're visiting we've got a jammed packed schedule already. do you think restaurant certificates are ok?

what do people think about the custom bobble?

As long as they would appreciate the humor behind a custom bobble, I love the idea!

I didn't even know you could get custom bobble heads!  That's pretty neat, and definitely a one of a kind gift!

I think a restaurant g.c. is a really good idea as long as there is a decent amount of time between the party and when they leave for their Peace Corps assignments. That way it can be like a last meal at a fancy or favorite place before they leave.

I'm not so into the bobble idea just because for that amount of money you could get a g.c. to a really fabulous restaurant, plus I don't know that they would want to/be able to take the bobbles with them when they are in the Corps and then they would just be stuck in storage somewhere.

cc that's a good point about the bobbles.. i just figured they are small and they will be in a stationary place for two years.. so i thought they could bring it with them? as for the money, we are going to split it with my bf's sister and her husband if we decide to do it. also his parents are flying us out and paying for our hotel so i feel like the money we would have spent to go out there and stay there would have been more than the bobbles in the first place.

i guess i was interested in the booble because i thought we could present them at the party and then people could remark on how they either look so much like or not at all like the mom and dad. i know a fabulous restaurant would be nice.. but we are going for wow factor! since it's retirement and also my bf's mom bday (i think i forgot to mention that before).

aclassicbeauty - oh yes you can get custom bobbles! i even have one of me! ;) it's actually thru work (they made one of everyone in the office). it's pretty interesting.

I didn't know they made custom bobbles until last week's episode of "The Office," when Dwight received one as a Valentine's Day gift. Anyone else see that?

The custom bobble is a really cute, funny idea as a gift for them, but personally I'd go with a gift certificate to a great restaurant. Since you're splitting the cost too, you could get them a GC to someplace really fabulous without personally breaking your bank. A nice dinner seems more commemorative of a special occasion, IMO. You could do the bobble heads when they come back, or for a wedding anniversary gift, like them dressed up in bride and groom costumes.

ETA: I had some more ideas. If you do go with the GC, you could also present them with a photo album you've made with pictures of you and everyone inside, or a framed photo of all of you with something engraved on it. The album could have photos from different times in the mom's life, like when she was working or on other birthdays, as kind of a "you're entering a new phase, here's a look back" kind of thing.
