Short answer: yes.

If you have the kind of relationship where he wouldn't be bothered if you gently (always gently!) told him that you'd prefer something else, then by all means...

However, some gifts are just meant to be accepted.  And I think you're the only person who can make that call.  Just my 2 cents!

Does he usually pick things out for you on his own? In our four years together, my husband has NEVER picked out a gift for me on his own. He only buys me stuff that I explicitly ask for. It makes me sad because I would like to be surprised sometimes. So I know that if he did finally choose a gift on his own and I didn't like it, he would be crushed and he'd probably never do it again.

That being said, if butthead usually doesn't buy gifts on his own, keep it and carry it occasionally when you guys go out together. If he is usually good at picking out gifts, maybe just tell him that you already have something very similar and that you'd like to exchange it for a different style.

tri sarah tops- that's a great point.  he always asks for a list.  i always know what i'm going to get.  this was a surprise, and he even wrapped it.  i def. can't ask to return it now or i never will get another surprise.

Agreed. Thus my Mickey Mouse birthstone necklace from Orlando & my recent tractor charm. Sometimes it's just "them" & if it's thoughtful, then I say suck it up. And it is a nice purse, it's not like it's major furry or something!

Are we married to the same man?  My husband refuses to pick anything out for me as a suprise because one time he got me a bottle of perfume.  I told him I loved it but then proceeded  to never wear it so he figured out that I didn't like it.  We had just started dating at the time and I didn't want to hurt his feelings!  He's never bought me another suprise since then and that was about 4 years ago.
