Awful Headache

Help you guys! I've had the worst headache since yesterday!! I keep taking Tylenol but it's not helping. It's not a migraine and I'm getting plenty of water so it's not from dehydration either. I hurts all over but especially in the back of my head, on the right side, and at the right temple there's this icky pinched feeling.

I technically have a history of migraines that last several days. (I never thought they were migraines because they weren't super painful, just annoying because they wouldn't go away but the dr. said they were.) Anyway, this may be one of those but it hurts more than they usually do so I think it's different.

Any suggestions for how to get rid of it? I don't want to be Debbie Downer all night tonight!

Ok, first of all, Tylenol has never helped a single headache I've had.  I would try Motrin or some form of Asprin.  Does it feel like a sinus headache - it doesn't really sound like one, but I just want to be sure.

If you take some Motrin and it still doesn't go away, try going home and laying down w/some ice on your head for a while - I do this when my headaches are really bad.

I hope you feel better!

Yuck, I hate headaches.  I get bad ones too.  Here are the things that I try....

3 Ibuprofen (sp?)
Hot pad around neck/shoulders (I have a "bed buddy" that gets heated up in the microwave)
A nice bath with lavender oil
Sometimes caffine helps

I hope you find something that works!

Aleve!  It's my lifesaver.  I don't get migraines but I do get headaches and it always helps.  Plus, my bff, who is a doctor uses it and swears by it as a pain reliever.  Apparently, it's so strong that it use to be sold as a prescription. HTH!

i second the aleve recommendation.  take one, and if it doesn't feel better in an hour, take one more.  you can also feel free to take it even though you already took tylenol--two different drugs (my dr. told me this).

PS--did you eat a bunch of chocolate and/or caffeine? sometimes (not always) this triggers a migraine for me.

If you have someone that can give you a head/neck and shoulders massage, that should help a lot too.

Thanks for asking. I went and bought some Aleve yesterday after work and took it yesterday evening. Luckily, my headache went away for most of VD night. (hee! VD. Okay, I'm a dork.)

But it's back! And it's creeping over to the left side. I kept waking up last night and not knowing why but this morning I knew my headache was back and that's why I kept waking up. Man, this sucks. I'm going home for lunch and if it isn't any better, I'll take another Aleve (just one this time - I took 2 yesterday).

It'll get better as soon as my period is over (mine are sometimes hormonally triggered), and it's not that the pain is that excrutiating, although it does hurt more than most headaches, it's just that it won't go away! Oh well. It'll get better with time. I'll just have to stick it out.

Sorry to hear that it's back - have you tried Excedrin? When I have a really bad headache, Excedrin is the only thing that helps. I think it's the caffeine. We have regular aspirin in the house too (ibuprofen and all that) but I always keep a bottle of Excedrin for emergencies.

Do you think it could be from any neck and shoulder pain you're having? If so, try massaging (or having the boy, or somebody) rub the neck/shoulder area and see if that helps. I have Fibromyalgia and sometimes pain in my head is triggered by pain in my neck...just a thought.

Hope you feel better soon!

yeah I second this, excedrin is the only thing I take for headaches and it always works for me. Hope you feel better!

I'm so old that I actually remember this!

blubirde - do you think the headaches are stress related? I actually ended up going to the doctor once because they wouldn't go away & he said that I held my stress in my neck & shoulders, which was making my head hurt. I'd occassionally go for a massage & that always helped loosen it up. I also have a "bean bag" that is heated in the microwave like grace mentioned & that helps as well.

ETA: that I just read that altgirl said the same thing. Sorry to be redundant.

Maybe I'll do that the next time I have one. Luckily, it's not nearly as bad today as it was earlier in the week. I can still feel it when I move around a lot but it's not enough to require me to take pain med. It's like remnant pain, if that makes any sense.

I wonder if the dr. could recommend a massage and ins. would pay for it? Anyone remember that Seinfeld where they did that? So funny.
