I made a summery dress. I'm actually really liking this one. I've had the idea in my head for a while but haven't found the motivation to make something that it's still way too cold to wear. But yesterday morning I decided to just cut the fabric, but ended up finishing everything but the hem (I ran out of white thread!). I feel like it needs something more though- maybe gold braid at the bust? What do you think? Please forgive the messy closet and crappy phone pictures.

Oh, it's just white gauze (fully lined) and right now it is unhemmed to mid calf. I can't decide if I want to leave it long or bring it up to the knee. What do you think?

That is so pretty! You are so talented.

I personally would leave it mid calf, but I just think that length is more flattering on me, so you can't really go by that.....

That is gorgeous!!!    You're so talented!

As far as the length goes, I think mid-calf is really flattering, but I feel like it's a little bit dressier than knee-length.

Thanks. Yeah, before I started I was planning to do mid knee but I really like the longer length too (which is unusual for me because I usually think longer skirts make me look shorter) so I might leave it. It's still pretty casual because of the fabric...I can't decide!

You SO have me wanting to learn to sew. Tell me this - do you find material you love & then go search out a pattern or do you find a pattern first. I only ask this because with my knitting a lot of times my project is determined by the fact that I fall in love with the yarn first....

How did you learn to sew?

I honestly don't even know how I learned! lol! I was in a sewing 4-H club when I was around 13, but I pretty much stuck to sewing skating dresses and the leader really did a ton of the work. Then I hadn't sewn in forever, but just kind of randomly started again last year. It's really not that hard. You just kind of have to think ahead about how the piecesd are going to go together and the way they'll fall before you sew it. And pin everything first so you can really get a good sense of how it'll look.

I've been doing the pattern first. I usually get an idea in my head about what I want (in this case, it was a white summery dress with braided straps) and then I'll go find a pattern that is similar enough so that I feel I can make whatever changes to it I need (I had to figure out how to make the braided straps on this one) to get it how I want. Although after all that, sometimes finding the right fabric can be the hardest part- I was surprised at how difficult it was to find soemthing in a lightweight white!

I like that braided shoulder strap!  I've been thinking about getting into making some clothing items.  Problem around here is lack of fabric stores.  JoAnne's crafts here is not the place for making cool clothes!  I wish I had a fabric store like the one shown on Project Runway!
