my poor throat!
Permalink Closed

About two weeks ago, I got a cold, which culminated in a really nasty sinus infection. I was on a 3-day antibiotics course about a week ago, and the dr. put me on allergy medicine, too, because I was getting allergies on top of all of this. Well, for the past week or so, I've felt about 75% better, but that last 25% just keeps hanging in there -- stuffy nose, drainage, etc. which is probably just the allergies.

This weekend, my throat started to hurt again, particularly on one side. It wasn't going away, so I decided to check my throat to see if it was strep or something. No strep, but my uvula (sp? the hangy-ball thing in the back of the throat) is enlarged on the left side...almost 2x the size of the other (which is also a little larger than it should be, I think).

Has anyone ever had this before? I really don't want to have to go back to the doc, because it's such a pain, since I don't have the kind of job where I can just take an hour off in the middle of the day. I was hoping this was just a consequence of the drainage. Any thoughts?  I googled "enlarged uvula" and just get a lot of info on snoring & sleep apnea.

It could be that your glands/tonsils are swollen, trying to fight off your cold, and it's making your uvula is swell too.

I get the worst swollen glands when I'm sick, and they usually go away after a while.  Once, a doctor recommended that I get one "drained" when it was super swollen (stick a needle in it and suck out all the gunk), but when I went to see the specialist, he said antibiotics would do the trick.

My SIL had to have one of hers drained, and she said it hurt like a mother$*%&, so I would avoid it at all costs!

Maybe if it doesn't get better in a few days, you can call your doctor and have him/her call in a prescription for you.  HTH!

that's usually a normal manifestation.  i would keep an eye on it, gargle warm salt water (i sweat, i can not emphasize this enough), and go to the doctor if it's not better by the thursday at the latest.

really really foul and gross, but salt water works. even though it makes me wanna puke everytime i do it, my throat always feels better afterwards.

You poor thing!  Whenever I get sick or bad allergies my uvula gets so swollen it actually makes me gag and impedes my speech.  I agree that salt water works wonders.

Hope you feel better soon!

phew -- I am glad it's a normal thing. My throat hurt so badly all day today, which sucks because I have to talk allllll day, every day. I left a message for my doc and asked her if there's anything I can do. I will try the salt water, though. Thanks a lot!
