I think someone in my apartment building is stealing my newspaper! Grrr. There have been a few issues that just weren't there in the morning, including this past Sunday's, which is the best one. I've spoken with the doorman and the NY Times delivery office, and they said they will have the delivery guy leave my paper at the front desk from now on so I can pick it up myself. However, in the meantime it got stolen again this morning. My BF thinks I should booby trap the paper, either by putting a mouse trap under it, or somehow rigging a bell to it so when the person goes to pick it up, the bell rings and I come running out to catch them in the act. He's all excited to bring over a baseball bat to scare whoever it is. If this were happening to you, would you try to catch the person who was stealing it, or somehow *get* them? Creative ideas welcome!
Ha, this IS happening to me. The past 2 weeks someone has taken our Sunday paper, and that's really the only one we read! Our house is right on the way to our downtown area, and a lot of people walk by on Sunday mornings going downtown to Starbucks or whatever. My husband thinks it's someone on their morning walk. We've been trying to think of ways to catch them too.
Maybe a nasty note tucked into the paper so whomever is stealing it knows you're onto them? If it continued after that I'd be all about rigging shit up to catch them in the act!

the same thing happens to us! we've had the last three sunday papers stolen. we've also had the last few saturday papers stolen (except last saturday, they took the local paper and left hubby's Wall Street Journal...heh). we have been trying to think of ideas too...the only one i came up with was to get up really early and watch through the peephole until they came to steal it and then fling the door open and catch them...i like the mousetrap idea though...
oh also...this is really weird...last week, maybe friday or saturday? our paper came in a plastic bag that had a little section for a sample of toothpaste and a coupon and someone ripped the bag and stole the toothpaste sample out of it, but left the paper!!
what is wrong with people though? they can easily go to the store and buy a paper for a few dollars, or even less during the week!
I would tape a note where the paper was supposed to be...
"Missing! One newspaper. Heartbroken owner reduced to reading the back of a cereal box during morning coffee. Reward offered for safe return, or any info that leads to recovery - no questions asked. See tenant in apt. ? for details."
That way you get a little revenge and they get a gentle reminder that this is NOT a victimless crime...
valenciana, that is nuts! what is wrong with someone that they would actually steal a toothpaste sample from your paper?
i didn't realize this would be such a common thing. it's so aggravating to think someone believe it's okay to steal a paper, and to not fork over a measly handful of change to buy their own copy. i like the idea of getting up early and watching out the peephole to catch whoever is doing it. if anyone watches "curb your enthusiasm," there was an episode this past season about someone stealing larry's paper.
thanks for the ideas, ladies. i'll try leaving a note and see if that helps. my apartment is right by the elevator so i think whoever's doing this might be grabbing it right before they leave in the morning.
oh this happens to me all the time too... my neighbors pick off my Luckys and occasionally my (expensive!!!!) design magazines. Selfish petty bastards.

that is the worst! it's one thing when you don't get your mail in general, it's another thing when they pick through and take what they want, as though your mail is barnes & noble. my old landlord use to pick through my ny magazines and take the ones with interesting covers.
