My godmother and close friend of the family just recently lost her mother and has invited us to go to a mass being held for her mother. I asked my mom what would be appropriate to wear and she said that since I am 16 I dont have to go in all black. But I personally feel that I should at least show some respect towards the family and not wear bright colors.
I was thinking about wearing my black gauchos, a black skirt or nice dressy black pants. But I need help on what color/types of tops I should wear.
I think it would be most appropriate to wear something modest and not flashy. I'd go with your black skirt or black trousers, maybe with something like this on top?

The gauchos may be too trendy for the occasion. A black skirt or dress pants would be best. Any top that is in muted tones and doesn't show a lot of skin is fine.
I agree that thegauchos mightbe too trendy for this occasion. I will go with the black skirt if it is not too cold, if it is the pants. And a blouse that has a muted or pale color.
