Okay, this is a spin-off thread from Courtney. I would love to learn to make simple things like courtney's aprons or a simple a-line skirt. I do not own a sewing machine but would like to invest in an inexpensive machine that is decent quality and i can store it away when not using. Any suggestions??

I'm by no means a sewing expert, so take this for what it's worth... a couple of years ago I wanted a sewing machine for Christmas. I am famous for wanting things like that and then not using them (I wanted to play the flute in 5th grade, so my parents bought me one. I had lessons at school for 5 months, and I could play one song, Hot Crossed Buns.). My parents got me a Kenmore, and I like it. I'm not sure of the model, but I know it's a very basic one. It can do a basic stitch and a zig-zag, and I'm not sure what else. I could probably count the number of times I've used it on my hands, but it seems like it's going to hold up pretty well. It's easy to learn on, and it's lightweight and portable enough that I can stick it on my shelf when I'm not using it.

I bought this machine a few years ago and I LOVE it. It's not on the Sears website anymore, but I found this one on Ebay from "Sears Liquidation Center" for WAY less than I paid for it. The auction ended, but I'm sure you can find other ones. It's super easy to thread and has a ton of different stitches. I think if my house was burning down, I'd save my cats and this sewing machine.

I have a Brother sewing machine.  Simple is better when your first starting out since you don't want to be overwhelmed by a bunch of features.  You shouldn't have to spend more than $100.  For some clothes you need a serger.  I got a mini for that, it does the trick.  Some sewing patterns are difficult to understand, so I suggest the Sewing for Dummies patterns.
