okay. i booked a hotel room for myself for work in mid-January. the place i am going i like to stay downtown and those rates go sky high the closer to the date you get.
i got a rate of $125 for a 4-star luxury hotel.
i find out this week that i have a new hire coming to join me. could i book her a room at my hotel also? no problem i say....
but there is a problem. the best rate i can get is $169 per night for her. *sigh* and everywhere else is higher...
so should i take the room? or continue to search for a better rate for both of us elsewhere? or i am i spending wayyyy too much time overanalyzing this?
well, you aren't paying for it anyway, are you? it's on the company? so if you book her at the same hotel, you are still getting her the best available rate, and the company is still saving some cash because you had the foresight to book your own room so far in advance. plus, it will be so much easier for you both to be in the same place. i think it's a no-brainer.
1. Are you both going for a conference or some big event that a lot of people are coming in out of town for? If so, book it now, because you might not be able to get a room if you wait.
2. If it's for some other purpose, and it's otherwise not a popular time for people to be vacationing or in the area, do what my aunt does (she's a true bargain hunter). Just show up the night you want to stay there and ask:
"We'd like a room, please. Is the hotel pretty full tonight?"
See what they say. Most of the time they'll reply, "No, we have quite a few rooms" (because they usually do), and that means you can HAGGLE! Say, "Okay, let's talk about the rate." At the very least, you should be able to get her in at the same price you are paying, if not less.
I've never tried this myself, but my aunt swears it works.

i guess i was over thinking it. yeah, its on the company and i already told my boss that the rates are up over $60 more than what i had originally booked...
