I want to make a destroyed mini a planned purchase this year. I've loved the look for maybe 5 years now and I finally will have the legs for it this year since I'm actually working out so much. When I've hit my final goal weight, I'll probably buy it.

Which one? Keep in mind I'm 5' 3" and while I'm well proportioned, I guess I have a shorter torso and shorter legs than most people.

1. Abercrombie and Fitch $59.50. I know every 12 year old owns it, but I think A&F makes the best lower-end denim (my 4 year old A&F jeans are still going strong, and I had to ditch my Sevens after 2 years because of holes). Too short?

2. J. Crew $88. It says it's 16 1/2 but it looks so freakin' long. Has anyone seen it IRL?

3. American Eagle $34.50

It's not quite destroyed enough, and IME the quality of the denim isn't quite worth the price point. I'd pay for it on sale, but I dunno...

Any other cute ones around? I won't do anything from the Gap/BR/ON trifecta, but I'll entertain anything at any other price point.

I just ordered this one from american eagle:

oops, can' post the pic b/c i'm on a mac -- it's the bungalow denim mini. here's the link:
http://www.ae.com/web/browse/product.jsp?rcid=womens&scid=cat90046&sscid=&navroot=womens&productId=0315_1725

i'll post a review when i get it.

I have 2 other summer skirts that are this same style from AE and they fit really well -- i wear them a lot. I'm 5'3 and they are the perfect length (they are 13 1/2" long) -- short enough to look like a cute mini but long enough that it's tasteful. they hit almost exactly in the middle of my upper leg.

i think the jcrew one would be too long if you're looking for a mini -- it would probably hit just above your knee.

I really like the Jcrew one. Its very cute and I think would be more versatile.

I actually like the Jcrew one the best. One reason: I am SOO anti A&F..

And I like that the JCrew looks a tiny bit longer.. Its still a mini but you can sit in it comfortably and not have to worry about your woo-haa making an appearance! :)

It depends how short you want it.  I saw the J.Crew one IRL and it might be too long for you, since you're shorter.  It looked like the perfect mini for me, but I'm 5'7.  I like the J.Crew one best though.  Any chance you can try it on first?

i also hate a&f but that mini is super cute.  i love the j crew one but i wouldn't consider it a mini, if thats what you want i would go for the a&f one.

IMO the Jcrew one looks like it would be darn near knee length.  Have you seen this one?

Hollister:

$40

if you want it deconstructed, i would try just cutting one.  it always bothers me when i see seams in the front of skirts, so i would vote against the j.crew one.  i voted for the abercrombie one.  one other option, i got this one a while ago (oct.) from j.crew and i really like it.  maybe check the outlets or ebay.

i have that same one as shopgirl.  and i agree with what she said--maybe it's a good idea to buy one that is a teeny bit too long on you, then you can cut it to exactly where you want it.

are you wanting it for weekends-only, or will this be something that you might wear to work sometimes with flats? i think cutting one yourself might give you the most versatility.

You might want to try looking for denim minis at Ross or T.J. Maxx- I got my A&F mini at Ross a while ago for like $10 and my other one at T.j. maxx last year for less than $20. I like the Hollister mini that Elle posted. I think their denim is decent for the price, and it IS cheaper than A&F.

I really liked that one but I was trying to be good so I resisted buying it. I would try looking for it at the outlets but you know what stinks? I think the nearest J. Crew outlet is 90 minutes away from LA. Times like this I really start missing Woodbury Commons.

jaymiek, thanks for the tip. I found a cute one from Hudson at my local Ross for $30 so I've had luck there before.

I'm definitely not thinking of spending a ton of money on this, since I can't wear destroyed denim to work.

A + F all the way, coming from someone that HATES that store and won't step into it for any reason other than the denim, sometimes.  i have that skirt in the bleached wash and i love it- almost bought that one too- maybe this summer i will.  i must have worn it every other day, so while the price IS high, its worth it to front the $60 over having a $35 skirt that is seriously so so.

I agree wih Lynnie - my A&F jeans from years ago last longer thaqn my new Joe's and Sevens.

Lynnie - love your styling on the mini!

A&F or A&E - I think they are reasonable and cute!

That Abercrombie & the last one seem waaaay short to me - just looking at the pics scream "hoochie" to me (sorry, lilykind - I know you're not a hoochie girl!). I like the jcrew one the best.

i have this one too.  i it.  but i do remember seeing it in the j.crew catalog and thinking "hmm that sure seems long"  but then when i got it, not so much.  so i voted for the j. crew skirt.

and another thing, there was once a dress from j.crew that i wanted but was no longer in stores or online, so i called and got it.  it *may* be a long shot, but you never know :)

good luck
