So angry! (LONG)
Permalink Closed

So I went to the Social Security office to get a replacement card yesterday and it was one of the worst experiences of my life.

I take my number right away.  They have this number system where they have three sets of numbers, depending on what you are there for.  My number is B250.  There are 10 booths and four rows of seats in front of the booths, there is no sign saying where to sit, so I end up taking a seat in a middle row between booths 7 and 8.  The people at the booths just call out the numbers and it is very hard to hear because the room is large and crowded.  They are supposed to call the number over the intercom one time before moving on to the next number (like a last call).

I sit there for over an hour and then I hear B248 called out, so I think "Yay, I will be up soon."  I listen very intently for my number, and 25 minutes later, I hear B256 called out.  WTF!!  Then B257 is called and I go up to a booth and ask if my number was called and dumbass says "Well, it must have been because we are past it already.  You just weren't listening.  You need to get a new number and wait again."

It is at this time that I notice all the "B" numbers are being called over at the opposite end of the room from where I was sitting, so I am sure I didn't hear my number called since the room is so loud.  I swear my number WAS NOT called over the intercom because I was sitting RIGHT IN FRONT of the intercom.

I had to go to work, so couldn't wait another almost two hours for a fricken card.  I was so angry I was about to punch anyone who even looked at me wrong.

That's ridiculous!  I'm so sorry you had to deal w/that - I would have wanted to kill someone.  It doesn't surprise me though - none of the government offices in this city are very organized.  So now you have to go back another day and deal w/this again?

Oh, that totally sucks! I agree with shopchicago that government offices aren't very organized. And not only that, the workers are totally rude too. My mom was telling me the other day that she had to go down to the DMV because there was a screw-up in her paperwork. When she tried to clear up the situation, the worker there had the audacity to shush her and tell her she's not allowed to talk.

I have a government job after years of working retail and private sector jobs. I am forced to act like a jerk due to the government's ridiculous rules. When I have to give people the run-around, it is because I am getting it just as bad from my supervisors! And the quality of the people I work with is horrendous and still shocks me to this day. At any other job I've ever had, I would have SO been fired if I acted the way most of my coworkers act. They wear sweat pants to work, are openly hostile and lazy, etc. Sorry...I can't talk about this job without going off the deep end!

Are there any smaller cities or towns with a Social Security office?  Those are alot less crowded.

I am so sorry about your job.  I think I would seriously go insane if I had to work at some of these places.

And berryahou35, there are other offices outside of Chicago, but with the travel time it would take just as much time out of my day so I am not sure if it is worth it.

I have since talked to other people who have had similar troubles--so at least I know I am not alone!
