I hate them. Unfortunately they are one of the few airlines that flies direct from LAX to PIT, so I travel them a lot. Here is my gripe:
My b/f and I gave up our seats for free flight vouchers in June. I tried to use the vouchers last year, but everything was booked. I figured that it was high travel season and I would just call back after the holidays and what not. Well......I called today. I was very very open - I only wanted a flight from LAX to PIT over a weekend (flying either Thurs, Fri, Sat). Well, USAir tried EVERY single weekend from today through the end of Sep and NO FLIGHTS AT ALL. The ONLY day I could fly to PIT was Sep 12, 2006, a random Tue (and this wasn't even definite b/c she wasn't sure there would be a return flight).
Ok, so I try to keep calm. I ask if I could book a flight in 2007. But no, you can only book 10 months in advance. WTF? The woman reassured me that a set number of seats on each flight are designated for award and voucher travel. Who are these people booking flights 8 months in advance? Seriuosly, I would like to meet them. They are freaky. WTF?!?!
I'm really sorry to hear about your problems with your voucher. I have an Icelandair voucher, and there's an option to cash it in, and get money. Maybe yours has the same? Good luck!

The bf and I always fly America West. We haven't had any problems with them, but US Airways bought them out, right? I hope we don't have any problems. So far it's been great, but all the flights have been completely booked.
My dad is a retired USAirways pilot and so are a lot of our family friends, so when I hear people asking others not to fly on a particular airline it makes me upset because there are so many people out there who rely on passengers to make their money and earn their pensions. Especially when all the airlines are struggling right now.
Anyway, that being said, I have a voucher that's good for a flight on USAirways and I just tried to use it to no avail. The customer service people were clearly in India and have no decision-making authority, so they're no help. I talked to my dad about this and he says that USAirways has gotten so many complaints regarding the quality of their outsourcing that they're going to scale back on it. It's frustrating because I'd really like to use it. If I find a way to use it, I'll let you know, so hopefully you can get some use out of yours too.
Please recognize that no airline is perfect. You'll encounter problems whether you fly USAirways, American, United, Southwest, etc etc. There are a gazillion people that work for these airlines that do their very best to make sure that customers are satisfied and sometimes there's not much they can do. So please consider what you say when you ask people not to fly USAirways.
Claudia--USAirways and AmericaWest merged, so they're more or less the same airline. I'm not sure how the whole thing will play out, or whether or not they will continue to fly under their respective names.

I am sorry that I made you sad. I am admittedly a giant hypocrite. The topic of my post is to not fly USAirways, but I *know* that I will be flying USAirways again - I fly them at least 5 times a year. I was just entirely frustrated with the situation. However, I think their customer service is horrid compared to other airlines that I have flown. I have used miles and free vouchers on both American and United in the past with absolutely no problem. I just find it hard to believe that there is not a single seat available on a flight from LAX to PIT for the next 42 weeks.
I guess in retrospect, my post should have read "Please let me vent about my negative USAirways experience", but that is not nearly as dramatic as the former....and I can't help it, I am a drama queen and this has just been very very frustrating.
I am sorry that I made you sad, but I am still very frustrated with USAirways. I hope that they seek an alternative customer service option soon.
