this is ridiculous, but i really really like ballatore champagne. it's usually around $9 or $10, but I've seen it as cheap as $5 before. It's my favorite, and I'll take it over expensive champagne any day. I've also converted everyone to it who's tried it ... It really turned me into a champagne drinker too...
Anyway, if you want something a little "nicer," (name only, IMO) I've had Korbel at bars before and it's not bad at all - I'm guessing it's around $20 a bottle.

We like Ballatore, too - it's pretty sweet though, just so ya know .

we got piper sonoma last night because my bf said it was good for a $12.99 bottle (world market). i also like moet. and at a champagne bar i go to in chicago, i like Godme Grand Cru Blanc de Noirs (soooo good) and Mumm "Joyesse" Demi-Sec.

go to cost plus/world market--they have the best prices and a pretty decent selection.
i have two favorites: nicholas feuillatte--it's not too sweet and has tiny tiny bubbles (i don't like the ones that are so carbonated they make me think i am drinking soda). the regular one is right around $29-$35, depending where you buy it. my other fave is taittinger la francaise--same thing with the bubbles, and it's pretty dry (i don't care for sweet). i don't know why, but it's more expensive this year than it has been every other year, but i think still right around $40--you used to be able to sometimes get it on sale for $29, but i haven't seen that this year.
veuve clicquot is usually on sale for $29 at cost plus right before NYE (i don't like it, but everyone else does). mumm cordon rouge is about $25 and very good--i give both of these for gifts a lot.
schramsberg is great, right around $30-35, piper-hiedsieck, same thing. there's also a perrier-jouet one that is $25-27--the one with the large flowers on the label--it's very good, but on the sweeter side.
I just went out and got a bottle of the Perrier Jouet with 2 glasses for $35. I've never tried it but am trying it this year since it was suggested here.
hey-if anyone is still looking for champagne for tonight, i went to cost plus yesterday and they had taittinger on sale for $25, which is an incredible deal.
I know it's a bit late but I had this NYE (recommended in Cooking Light) and it was wonderful! And only $7 at HEB. Good stuff. We wanted so many more bottles of it before the night was over...
