Can you recommend one for $40 or under?  It's for NYE.  Thanks!

this is ridiculous, but i really really like ballatore champagne.  it's usually around $9 or $10, but I've seen it as cheap as $5 before.  It's my favorite, and I'll take it over expensive champagne any day.  I've also converted everyone to it who's tried it ...  It really turned me into a champagne drinker too...

Anyway, if you want something a little "nicer,"  (name only, IMO) I've had Korbel at bars before and it's not bad at all - I'm guessing it's around $20 a bottle.

We like Ballatore, too - it's pretty sweet though, just so ya know .

you could get veuve chicquot for under $40! it's the celebration champagne!

under $40 you could get a lot of decent bottles.

certain types of moet should be under $40 and maybe even some perrier-jouet..

piper something is also okay

i think the big names that are just out of that range are dom and krug

on a side note what does dry, extra dry, and brut mean?  I never know.

i don't know about brut, but the more dry something is, the less sweet it is.  if something is very dry, it probably won't be sweet at all.

we got piper sonoma last night because my bf said it was good for a $12.99 bottle (world market).  i also like moet.  and at a champagne bar i go to in chicago, i like Godme Grand Cru Blanc de Noirs (soooo good) and Mumm "Joyesse" Demi-Sec.

I like the Moet & Chandon White Star in that price range. My DH doesn't even like champagne, and he found it fairly palatable.

go to cost plus/world market--they have the best prices and a pretty decent selection.

i have two favorites: nicholas feuillatte--it's not too sweet and has tiny tiny bubbles (i don't like the ones that are so carbonated they make me think i am drinking soda).  the regular one is right around $29-$35, depending where you buy it.  my other fave is taittinger la francaise--same thing with the bubbles, and it's pretty dry (i don't care for sweet).  i don't know why, but it's more expensive this year than it has been every other year, but i think still right around $40--you used to be able to sometimes get it on sale for $29, but i haven't seen that this year.

veuve clicquot is usually on sale for $29 at cost plus right before NYE (i don't like it, but everyone else does).  mumm cordon rouge is about $25 and very good--i give both of these for gifts a lot.

schramsberg is great, right around $30-35, piper-hiedsieck, same thing.  there's also a perrier-jouet one that is $25-27--the one with the large flowers on the label--it's very good, but on the sweeter side.

HTH!

Mumm is the best in my opinion

Perrier Jouet is wonderful too.

I just went out and got a bottle of the Perrier Jouet with 2 glasses for $35.  I've never tried it but am trying it this year since it was suggested here.

I know it's a bit late but I had this NYE (recommended in Cooking Light) and it was wonderful! And only $7 at HEB. Good stuff. We wanted so many more bottles of it before the night was over...
