Have you been to an Ear, Nose, and Throat specialist? An ear specialist should be able to treat you. My mom had it pretty bad earlier this year and luckily one of the people that lives in their condo complex is an expert in treating vertigo, so he was able to lay her on the bed and flop her head around a few times and that seemed to do the trick.
Jocey--vertigo is an inner ear problem that causes severe dizziness. It can be brought on by a number of things: a blow to the head, a virus, and age seem to be the most common, to my knowledge. Basically in your ear you have these tiny little crystals that settle in one spot and they maintain your sense of balance. If those crystals get knocked out of that spot, your body can't really orient itself and you get dizzy. When the doctor flopped my mom's head around, he was essentially getting those tiny little crystals to go back to the right spot. She then had to keep her head up for 24 hours just so they would settle there again.
Stylechic, I can't imagine what you're going through. It sounds positively awful. See if you can find someone that specializes in vertigo and they should be able to treat you, usually with some pretty simple maneuvers. If you happen to be in the Virginia/West Virginia area, PM me and I can get you the name of the guy who treated my mom, who practices in that area most of the time.
do you have problems with your hearing? or have you been in loud places recently?
i get vertigo sometimes, but i have hearing deficiencies and balance problems related to that...my father-in-law has it worse than me, but a grenade went off near him and damaged his hearing when he was in the army.
i don't really know what to suggest, since it's something i've always dealt with, i guess i don't even notice it anymore.
also, here is wikipedia's def of vertigo:
Vertigo is the sensation of spinning while the body is stationary. With the eyes shut there will be a sensation that the body is in movement; if the eyes are open the surrounding will appear to move past the field of vision.
The effects may be slight; may cause nausea; or, if severe, may give rise to difficulty with standing and walking. Vertigo is usually associated with a problem in the inner ear balance mechanisms (vestibular system), with a problem in the brain, or with the nerve connections between these two organs.
I get this too, I have bilateral acoustic neuromas/vestibular schwannomas. Have you been to an otolaryngologist or neurologist. I sometimes close my eyes or take slow deep breathes to get my bearings.
