So as many of you know.. in college a few years back.. i worked at a store in the mall.. that targets college kids, expensive, preppy, and said store doesn't sell clothes off their forms. (I dont really want to mention the name since this involves a lawsuit.) PM me if you still dont know or dont remember mention of it on my old posts.
Anyway, a few years back I was involved in a class-action lawsuit against them for underpaying their workers. Basically we were getting paid minimum wage and were FORCED to buy a certain number of items per month (for not a great discount).. So in the end, we were really making WAY below minimum wage. Me and thousands others.. each got like $100 in the settlement.
And again last year I was notified about another class-action suit against them. This one for discrimination. (Not sure if anyone else noticed.. but this store doesnt really make a habit of hiring/employing minorities and anyone overweight. These people consider anyone size 6 or above as overweight.) They have a certain look and they want all employees to be models. Well when I started working there I was a model (literally) 5'5 and about 120lbs. I met DH while I worked at this store and we got pretty serious quickly. In our first year together I got comfortable and put on a quick 20 lbs. Well conveniently the store stopped returning my phone calls and pretty much refused to put me on the schedule. I was never fired or let go and no one could give me a good explanation as to why I wasn't getting any hours. I knew this was discrimination.. because I had gained a little weight..
I also took part in discriminating against others, when I was super skinny. If an overweight person or somone who wasn't pretty enough came in to ask for an application.. we were instructed to tell them that we werent hiring.. But the truth is.. if you were perfect enough, we were always hiring.
But I digress.. when I got info on this latest class-action suit. I decided that I wanted to participate. I wrote my story and said that I thought I had been discriminated against when I began gaining weight. I never heard anything from the lawyers and then yesterday out of the blue I got a letter with the details of the case. Included was a check for.....
$3000!
Can you believe it?! I was so thrilled. And it couldnt come at a better time. With two wrecked cars, vet bills for Frank, buying a new house and probably having to pay two mortgages for a few months. We have never been soooo broke. I am just so happy right now. I think someone is watching over us! Just wanted to share!
Well, it's about time your karma came back around! I'm glad that you got the money, especially at a time when it was needed, and that the company you worked for is being called on their shitty policies.

Yay!!! I had a friend who worked there in college and she could tell stories just like you of all the things that went wrong. I am so happy they are finally having some justice brought (not that it will changes things IMO).

That's great and obviously well deserved! Good for you - I'm glad they are paying (literally) for discriminating against you. I don't even need the name of the store to know who you are talking about!
That's great I'm glad you guys won and for once a class action suit paid out more than $1 per person. I'm sure in the process you also learned a bit about discrimination and what it feels like on both sides!

And, like the others, I'm pretty sure I know what store you're talking about. I hate that place and have vowed never to buy from them again. It's my own personal boycott.
