Um, is this Rude?

So I was just in the elevator at work and some middle aged woman turned to me and said "God, are you skinny!  Do they call you twiggy?"  The she laughed and said "it's a good thing -  when you get older, you'll probably gain 50 pounds."

Should I take this as a compliment or insult..I actually laughed and then wondered   It was very random!

It's terribly rude no matter how she meant it.

Was she older and 50+ pounds overweight? I'm guessing YES!

Eh, f*ck her. I have no time for the random insults of strangers. Rather she was trying to be rude or not, it was. Sounds harsh but there are so many annoying people out there! (Of course, I'm on the edge of a slamming-the-door-fit because everyone around here is wearing jingle bells b/c of the xmas party. Really? Is the annoying jingle noise necessary? I'm not a grinch but give me a break!)

And you SO will not gain 50 pounds when you get older. Moron.

I'd take it as her being jealous and bitter and nothing more than that.

Hehehe...just to make her all the more jealous, you could say "I know, I've been stuffing myself with Christmas cookies so I can put on a few pounds, but it just doesn't seem to be working!"

At first, when she said "you're so skinny" I said um, thanks I think.  Then when she replied w/I'm going to gain 50 lbs. I thought she was being a b*tch.  Whatever - yeah, she was like 50 years old and not thin.  I thought it was a little harsh to tell me I'll gain 50lbs and chalked up to her being bitter.  blubirde, your post me me die laughing!

What a stupid thing to say.....some people have no idea how to act civilized around other people. It doesn't matter what adjective they're using -- making comments about ppl's bodies is inappropriate, especially if you don't even know them. How would she have felt if someone said to her, "God, you are fat! Do they call you fatty? I bet you'll gain even more weight as you get older..." Just wrong!

LOL!!!!!!! Seriously I laughed so hard I almost peed my self. Too bad you can't get a something like a cowbell or something loud and wear it around your neck in retaliation.
Shopchicago: what a jealous old bitch to say somthing like that too you. I swear some older women can be so rude!!!!!!!!

She probably intended the first part to be a compliment.

The second part was to make herself feel better.

Hmmm... I'm planning my New Year's revenge right as we speak...

Maybe I'll unload a lot of baked goods and candy on all these people to ruin their New Year's resolution. They deserve that too after taking advantage of my "eat whatever you want" diet. Turns out eating whatever you want = gain 5 lbs. Urgh. I blame it strictly on coworkers and their damned holiday eating patterns!

(Yes I realize I have a complete lack of personal responsibility. And I'm grumpy. I'm cool like that.)

oh man, I get this kind of crap from people sometimes, too, although it usually comes in the form of, "how the hell do you eat like that and stay so thin?" It's unspeakably rude. Why don't they just say, "you should weigh 40 pounds more than you do, you greedy cow," and have done with it?

Oooh this makes me so mad!  Just about every day at work, a co-worker or customer must comment on how thin I am.  Seriously rude.  I know how disgustingly thin I am, I don't need to be told so as well.  Comments on saying how I need to eat something is very hurtful.  It's to the point where I get embarrased to use a rest room by a food court in the mall or after I leave the break room at work since I'm thinking people must think I'm going in there to throw it all up, but I don't!
