So today, the charge for my Gucci got taken from my checking account. It also happens that the 2 places I bought things today, each told me that I had "insufficient funds" when I tried to use my checking account to pay for my purchases.
I'm a little confused, because the Gucci purchase took only half of my checking account balance, and both online AND the phone hotline are saying I have plenty of money available, after this huge purchase...Why the heck am I getting told I have insufficient funds when the money is there?
I know that I have a $2000/day spending limit when I use my debit card, and I certainly did not spend that much today, even with Gucci charging me.
Any thoughts or opinions on this? If I get the same "Insuffient funds" message tomorrow when I buy my latte, I will be calling my bank, but I can't do anything right now (6:30pm).
I also know that any other big checks, like my rent, cleared awhile ago, so they didn't contribute to that $2000 max. limit thing.
I know this is directly related to my bag purchase, because my card worked fine yesterday...
i totally can't remember if this is true or not..but i think someone once posted that when you make a big purchase on your debit card, or go to a bar- they put a hold on more money than the purchase- sometimes double. so that could be it. Or, your card could be flagged because of the huge purchase and so its just not letting you make any purchases. sometimes my cc does this and its so annoying- i have to call them and be like, "YES, it IS me that's spending 6 bazillion dollars."
If you don't normally make huge purchases perhaps your bank temp. froze your account thinking that someone else was using your card. I don't know, just a thought. I guess I wouldn't be surprised if you got a call verifying your charge.

Lynnie is right. The store could be authorized more funds than your purse cost, therefore making you appear to be overdrawn. I'd call your bank tonight or first thing in the morning.

Yeah, I think I'll definitely call, or even stop in on my way to work tomorrow..
This would make sense with the weird detail on the online statement: It says "Current balance: $$$$", and then below also "Available balance: -$$$$". The negative sign on that was a sign today. Meaning I should have called right away today....Sigh...
I won't be charged any fees for this, will I? Especially if I'm calling up and verifying the charge?
You shouldn't be charged any fees - and if you are, I'd personally refuse to pay them! It's not your fault they froze your account or authorized more funds than the charge was made for.

I know they do this at bars and at restaurants or anyplace where you may leave a tip. This is to ensure you can pay for a reasonable tip in addition to your bill. I don't know if they'd ever do this with a regular purchase.
Although sometimes if they make a mistake, void it, and then reswipe and recharge your card, it will hold the funds for both credit card swipes.
I guess I'm a little upset by the fact that I didn't even get a phone call about the purchase, or what was happening to my account. But I'm going to my bank tomorrow morning before I go to work, so hopefully this is cleared up FAST...
Does you bank have an 800# you can call them and talk to a person tonight. Other wise I think Gucci probably got authorization for the full amount and will only take 1/2 now and 1/2 later just to make sure that the funds are available. If this is the case It could take a day or 2 to clear up cause guccies auth. needs to expire. It could also be the fraud thing and they are trying to protect you. The computer recognizes large transactions but a human doesnt always see it until you call or come in that is why you did not get a phone call form the bank.
Okay, everything is normal with my account again. I checked my account online and it looked normal; Still called my bank to make sure that everything was clear and that I could use it, and also to verify that I did make the Gucci purchase...
I was able to buy my latte this morning (No one needs to be around me without my coffee in me)
