I was at Sam's today & they had Anne Klein cable knit crew neck cashmere sweaters for $40. At that price I figured I'd give it a shot - have you ever bought one? I think I remember a discussion about this before but I wasn't sure...

That's what I thought too, but it says that it's 2 ply & 100% cashmere - we'll see. I just wish I knew now because they are a holiday item & i know they will be gone by the time I figure it out & if I like them I'll wish I had bought the black too.

Pull the sides of the sweater outward and see if it bounces back. I tighter knit, higher quality cashmere will bounce back. A loose knit, which is typically lower quality, won't.
You can also do a little test to see if the sweater was knit with the longer fibers from the animal - in cashmere longer fibers is better. In a small discreet part of the sweater (you can even do this on the inside), rub a spot quickly cack and forth with your hand. A lower quality sweater will usually pill excessively right away. Even a higher quality cashmere is going to pill a bit initially, but it will be a much smaller amount.
Either way, you really can't beat $40 for cashmere.
