Son of a Witch (Sequel to Wicked)

Anyone else reading it? I just started, so I don't know if it will be any good, but the writing is really clever. A couple of my favorite lines so far:



"The deceased was a curious creature," said the Princess. I only met her once, but she impressed me with her stamina. She did not seem the type to die."


"Who does?" asked Dorothy.


"Speak for yourself," muttered the Lion. "I die a little bit every day."


and:



"Oh Toto!" shreiked Dorothy suddenly. "Where's Toto?"


"He's wandered off to do his business," said the Lion. "Just between you and me, it's about time he learned to be private about it. I know you dote on him, but there is a limit."


"He'll be lost," she cried. "He couldn't find his way out of a cracker barrel. He's not very bright, you know."


After a respectful pause, the Tin Woodman observed, "I think we all noticed that."


"I hate to be obvious," added the Scarecrow. "But you'd have saved yourself a lot of trouble if you were'nt too cheap to invest in a leash, Dorothy."

im reading it too! it is very funny. almost to the point where i have to re-read certain parts to make sure that im really getting the wit. ive read a couple of other books that the wicked author wrote, not as great. :(


the original oz series (there are like 15 or so that baum wrote) are all pretty witty too so it's nice that the original theme is being kept.


if you like wit/funny, i would suggest looking at alice and wonderland and alice through the looking glass. very funny. i mean come one...one of the characters is a mock turtle!

I was thinking about reading Wicked.... im assuming you guys have read that since your reading the sequel.... What did you think of Wicked? Like to hear your thoughts, normally dont read whimsical books like this, but wanted to give it a try.

I liked Wicked -- I read it earlier this year and then re-read it for my book club last month. I think it's very good, but you have to really like The Wizard of Oz (either the movie or the book) to appreciate all the subtleties of Maguire's writing. If you're not really a Wizard fan, it will seem sort of weird when you read it. There are a lot of plot holes and some awkward writing, but the overall effect is cool and very thought-provoking. I've read a couple of Maguire's other books and liked them, too.

i might read these next. I am going to see Wicked Tuesday in Chicago and then I want to read these books....thanks for the recs.
