My bathroom is ugly!

I've decided that I want to do something about my ugly, boring master bathroom.  I live in an apartment, so painting is unfortunately out of the question.    Does anyone have any tips on how to make an ugly bathroom less hideous?  Right now, there are literally no decorations in it.  My bathroom set consists of chrome plated and white plastic accessories left over from law school.  Most of the metal casings rusted so I chucked them, leaving only the plastic. (here's the set: http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/ref=br_1_10/602-2153684-5671817?%5Fencoding=UTF8&frombrowse=1&asin=B00023ELEG). There's a purple rug on the floor in front of the sink, and a towel rack.  That's it.  The toilet and sink are on the same long wall with a mirror that covers all the wallspace above the vanity and toilet.  The shower is a stand up shower w/ a glass door, so a cute shower curtain won't help.  I'd post a pic, but I'm at work. 


I really want to make it look nice, it's so ugly.  Help? (Oh, and I should add that I can't make it too girly, since hubby has to use it, too. )

ugh- I hate ugly bathrooms! I hung some white shelves in mine (from Target- it was a set of three that are all different sizes)- one had a potted plant on it, one has perfume bottles on it, and one has some other random stuff. the plant brightens it up a ton. I also framed some pretty cards (of art prints) with nice matting and hung it opposite the toilet. That helps a lot too.


I'd take a pic, but I'm in the middle of moving so everythings a mess. I'll try to remember to take one of the new place when it gets set up. :)

I would go ahead and hit up Target...check out the bathroom dept AND the furnishings...you'll be suprised at what you can find.  I live in a townhouse apt and have a similiar problem.  When we moved in the tiles in the bath area were these light moss green kind of color and the carpet was tan...I ended up going with a red floral theme.  But now they've redone the bathroom...still tan carpet but now the tile is white. 


I love the idea of bringing in some plants...greens like ivy I am thinking.  Maybe find a shower curtain you like and build a theme off of that?

I'm with you on the plant idea (I have one in my bathroom too) -- especially if you could hang a fern from the wall or ceiling (depending on the variety, they don't need a ton of light and they loooove steamy, humid places).

Thanks for the suggestions!  I'm thinking shelf with some framed photos, candles, and plant might help. :)  Also, for those of you who have framed pictures in your bathrooms, does the steam from the shower ruin them eventually?

I have framed pictures in my bathroom, and I haven't noticed any steam issues with them.  It would probably be best if you could get that kind of papery-stuff that professional framers use to "seal" the back of the frame once the picture is mounted.  That should help keep the picture nice and dry.  Or you could just use cheap pictures, like me, and replace them if they do eventually get warped.
