Has anyone been? Tonight, Vin and I are going. It'll be my first time. Any tips, advice, suggestions? The lighting isn't until 9, but we were planning on going right after work.
i went last year, and while it was nice to do one a very ny thing, i would probably not do it again. first i think you should get there as early as possible. if you can leave work early definitely do that. i got there around 6 last year and it was so packed. my friend and i actually had to outmaneuver the police b/c they were turning people away due to a lack of space. we claimed we were going to sak's and then just went to the lighting from there.
when we got a place in the crowd we really couldn't see anything. i think they had tv's broadcasting it, but literally all we saw were the sides of buildings, and some bright lights. we were standing on one of the side streets that borders rock. center b/t the center & fifth avenue.
also there were so many annoying teenagers, which i think was the worst part. i think it was just bad luck but we ending up standing near this group of 10 or so kids that were 15/16 or so, who did this whole running commentary for the duration of the event. it was annoying. plus they kept trying to push through the crowd.
i heard you can get tickets to be up in the front... where would i get those.. like now .. ?
i was on their website and didn't see anything about tixs, though i didn't see that much info. on the lighting in general, outside of stuff about the tree. overall it was a good experience, and if you haven't been i would go. but just try and get there early.
I've never been but you definitely have get there as early as possible. As dot pointed out you're lucky that the weather is really warm. Last year I forgot that the tree lighting was going on and made the mistake of going to Saks on a late lunch break and then made the more hideous mistake of trying to cut through Rock Center on my way back to the office at aruond 4pm. It was packed, there were police barricades everywhere and it was impossible to figure out who was just stopped on the sidewalk waiting for the ceremony to start and who was trying to move to a particular spot and who was trying to just walk through. It took me over a half hour to walk from 5th to 6th avenues. So if there's any way to get out of work early I would recommend doing that. Oh also there were soundchecks and stuff being shown on the big screens even at 4 so you won't be totally bored waiting for the show to start!
