What is on my eyelid?
Permalink Closed

When I woke up this morning I noticed that my eye was kind of itchy, so I made sure that I kept my glasses on for a good long while before I put in my contacts. I figured that it was just irritated from the dryness of the air or allergies. After I ate breakfast the itchiness went away and I put in my contacts. I started my morning routine (shower, blow-dry/style hair, makeup, get dressed...) and all seemed fine. Then I finally looked in my mirror to put on my makeup, and I found a strange little bump on my eyelid. It looks almost like a teeny tiny blister. It's on the bottom of the lid, under my eyelashes... the under side of it, where it meets the bottom of my eye (I don't know what you call this part ... it's where the bottom eyelashes are). Ever since I noticed it, it's been irritating me. Whenever I blink, it kinda-sorta hurts (but I think this may be in my head... although the irritation is definitely real). I didn't see my mom today, but when I talked to her quickly on the phone, she said it sounds like a sty (I may have totally butchered that word, if that's even what she said ). Anyone know if she's right, and/or what that is? I'm just kind of nervous, even though I'm pretty sure it's not a big deal.

It does sound like a stye. They usually feel kind of uncomfortable and then it hurts whenever you blink. Luckily they go away quickly. I don't think I've ever had one for more than 3 days. You probably don't have anything to worry about unless it lasts for like a week or gets bigger.

Yep, it's probably a stye.  You are probably not imagining the pain, although it's more of a nuisance than anything.  If you can't go to the eye doctor for a while, you can put a warm wet washcloth on your eye for about five minutes, three times a day.  I used to get them a lot, and that's all the doctor ever told me to do.  They go away in about a week.  Good luck!

my doctor told me to boil an egg and then wrap it w/a paper towel, that way the heat stays longer and you dont have to keep getting up to get hot water often. i've only had this once and it hurt me like a MF!

and you can also buy stuff over the counter for it too, i'd put it on at night if you have to wear contacts during the day.

hth!

Yup, sounds like a stye.  There's an over the counter treatment called Stye that works pretty well.  I'd do the hot water or the boiled egg trick and put some of the treatment on, and you should be fine.

I'm not sure if they can spread to the other eye, but you might want to just make sure to wash your hands a lot just in case.

I had this over the summer too. I didn't know what it was. I itched my eye and then noticed it was irriated and then i saw the bump. It is so uncomfortable. Mine went away in like 3 days.

Does anyone know why you get them?

I've heard you can get them from using "old" make-up but I'm sure there are lots of other ways too.

Stephanie - I had a stye once and my Dad said he used to get them too and my grandmother would boil hot water and then dip a tea bag into the hot water like you're going to make tea but don't soak it for too long and pull the hot tea bag out of the water, squeeze it so most of the water comes out and then put the hot, damp tea bag on your eye for about 15-20 minutes.  I tried it and the stye was gone in a few hours.  Plus, the warm tea bag feels great on your eye.

Thanks, everyone. I did the water on the wash cloth, boiled egg in paper towel, and tea bag things (throughout the course of the day) and it feels better. The bump went down, but is not gone yet. I leave for NYC for the weekend tomorrow, so I think I'll go to the drug store and get some of that Stye stuff, incase it starts bugging me again.

I was wondering where they came from, too. As far as why I got it... old makeup just might be the culprit . I left my mascara upstairs when I was getting ready one day, and, being the lazy person I am, I used one that must have been sitting in my makeup drawer for 6 months or so. How gross am I ? Live and learn, right?
