After months of speculation on their marital status, Newlywed duo Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey have come clean and announced they are breaking up.
"After three years of marriage, and careful thought and consideration, we have decided to part ways," the couple tells Us Weekly in a joint statement.
"This is the mutual decision of two people with an enormous amount of respect and admiration for each other. We hope that you respect our privacy during this difficult time."
There was no immediate word on whether a divorce was in the offing.
The news comes just one month after Us Weekly and Life & Style both featured cover stories on the purported breakup, amid denials from both Simpson and Lachey's reps and public declarations of fidelity.
"Yes, we're married, and we love each other," Simpson told OK! magazine in its Oct. 10 edition. When asked why she wasn't sporting her hefty engagement ring at the time of the interview, she replied, "I don't need diamonds on my finger to show that I love my husband.
But Simpson and Lachey continued to make the rounds ring- and spouse-free. He went to Tuesday night's American Music Awards solo and was conspicuously absent at sister-in-law Ashlee's 21st birthday party in Las Vegas in October.
Simpson, meanwhile, admitted to Teen People earlier this month that the intense media focus on her union had caused her to seek therapy.
Sources have said the pair went their separate ways close to three months ago, despite statements to the contrary.
Lachey and Simpson's third wedding anniversary was Oct. 26. The couple wed in 2002, back in the days of mutual B-list status, when Simpson was categorized as a less famous version of Britney Spears and Lachey was one of the members of 98 Degrees, a boy band not nearly as hot as, say, 'N Sync or the Backstreet Boys.
After the couple tied the knot, they rocketed to fame virtually overnight on the success of their MTV reality show, Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica, which chronicled the misadventures of their day-to-day lives.
Simpson, in particular, became a reality-TV darling, with her tendency to make embarrassing, yet endearing blunders, such as confusing Chicken of the Sea brand tuna for actual chicken and believing that buffalo wings were actually made of buffalo.
The "With You" singer enjoyed a sensational rise in record sales as a result of the show's success and landed a role as Daisy Duke in the Dukes of Hazzard movie, which enjoyed opening-weekend box-office sales of $30.7 million and has gone on to gross more than $90 million.
First-year sales of Simpson's cosmetic line, Dessert, are projected to hit $30 million.
While his wife enjoyed a meteoric rise in fame, Lachey's career failed to keep pace.
His first solo album, SoulO, tanked on the charts, selling just 105,000 copies, per Nielsen SoundScan, and ABC passed on a pilot he shot costarring Gina Gershon.
Though Lachey eventually landed a recurring role on the WB's Charmed and more recently a gig as a contributor on ESPN's College GameDay, fame-wise, he has lived largely in Simpson's shadow.
At one point, Simpson's father, Joe, was working with Lachey to change that image by developing a new MTV reality series featuring the former boy bander's struggles to sign with a record label. It's unclear whether that project is still underway.
Speaking to Us Weekly at the AMAs Tuesday, the elder Simpson vowed his clan would soldier on.
"We are Simpsons," he declared. "We take a lickin' and keep on tickin'."
Don't get me wrong,I don't wish anyone this kind of pain, but this seperation has been dragged out looooong enough. The coverage has been on E! every 30 minutes or so. I just wish them both the best, and maybe now they'll BOTH disappear from the front of every magazine.......so how long before Brit and K Fed do the same? bets anyone?
P.S Sean's baby pics are supposed to be in People on Friday. The ones that were "stolen".
P.P.S.I SWEAR I'm not a bitch...really!

I hate to say 'I told you so' but this is the third thing from that email that my friend sent me about all of that Hollywood Insider gossip that has come to fruition. And although it may never come out in the press I think that we all know that Lindsey Lohan is probably a coke head so we will just call that #4.
I hate to say that I want time to go by fast, but I can't wait until 10 years from now when Tom and Katie split because their contract is up.

I saw this on E! last night and I wasn't the least bit shocked. Its sad because they seemed like such a good couple, but it was also a long time coming. Unfortunately, I doubt this means they won't be on magazine covers anymore - remember Brad & Jen? That's still on the covers!
Can I just say that I'm really sad about this! I respected Jess for saving herself for marriage, I watched Newlyweds, I own it on DVD! I saw her in concert...I just really actually thought this marriage would work. I hated the mags for saying they were breaking up but now it's true...BOO!
Farrah I remember you sending that too! Didn't it also say Jessica was a coke head? I would not doubt that either. I think most of those Hollywood types are. I think any of those rumors have truth behind them even when the celebrities try to disprove them. They always say the magazines are wrong, but within time the magazines are always proven to be right. The magazines probably pay off so many people to get those stories that they are probably acurate 99% of the time.
Well the good news is that now Jessica's dad can have his little princess all to himself again!! EWWW!!! That man disgusts me!! If I were Nick I would have gotten out of that crazy family waaayyyyy before now!!!
It's sad to see a marriage break up, but I've also always been of the opinion that Nick was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too good for her. He must have the patience of a saint to deal with her (and her father) for the past three years. I hope he finds someone nice and down to earth to remarry.
I'm such a dork but this makes me sad. I really think they would have made it if not for doing "Newleyweds". Sad that their need for fame over took their marriage.

I think doing "Newlyweds" was a death knell for their relationship. It's too bad, but I am not a fan of either of them, so I can't say I am distraught. I do wonder why it took so long to announce it? It seems like they've been separated for awhile.

so true. it's like they sold the soul of their marriage.

I was thinking the same thing. Now they're famous and have a lot more money, but lost their marriage.
So disappointed in them, not just because they are finally splitting, but because they presented themselves in a certain loving marriage and instead it appears they were banking on that ideal, but had too little intention of keeping it together. losers.

I am truely disappointed to hear this. I was really routing for them. Seems like it was over for a long time.. I dont know why they waited so long to finally confirm the rumors.

This is what I think too - what is wrong with saying, "look, like every other married couples, we are having issues, adjusting to not having cameras following us around, we are trying to work it out & would appreciate it if ya'll (media) could respect our privacy during this time." Really, what's wrong with that? I'd have way more respect for them than both of them straight out lying about how their marriage was stronger than ever, etc etc.
