i adore your style, and your love of "the big lebowski" sealed the deal for my nomination of you. so here are a few questions to start:

what other movies do you consider to be your favorites?

can you tell me a little about your darling avatar that has popped up recently? i love the photograph and the little dotted line edge. what made you choose it?

i know that you recently moved to brooklyn. where did you call home before you moved? where are you from originally? now that you've moved, what do you miss (if anything)?

congrats, lynnie!

  • tell us about your new job!  you're working for a designer, right?  what's your typical day like?
  • how did you get such amazing style??  have you always had such a knack for putting outfits together?  seriously, you pick out the best pieces and i love all your outfits on threadstyle.
  • what's your favorite band?  tv show?  book?

i'll think of more questions later...

What kind of wedding do you want (if any)?

How did you meet your boyfriend?

What would you name your kids (if you had any)?

How is the transition to New York and out of college going?

What do you want for Christmas?

I'll try to think of more.

oh, i'm so excited!

what other movies do you consider to be your favorites?

Ok, probably my fave movie is Zoolander.  I love Derek Zoolander, I love Hansel, and I love Mugatto.  I love the actors that play these people, and I think Ben Stiller is *so* cute.  I have actually searched "Ben Stiller" in community webshots just so i can see normal folks getting pics taken with Ben.  My bf has also been told that he looks a lot like Ben, so maybe I have an odd attraction to either Ben-lookalikes or BF-lookalikes?  So yea, I think Zoolander is so funny.

Also love The Royal Tenenbaums (not as much because of Ben).  I think its really funny and beautiful, but kind of sad and very dark.  I like that combo.

Hmm...i'm pretty random with movies and haven't seen too many.  I also really liked the virgin suicides (love kirsten dunst in it, i like dark, sad young girls, they really speak to that side of me), Clueless might be one of the best movies ever and one that really defined my generation, and Miyazaki anime films- they are SO imaginative and beautiful it makes me want to cry, especially princess mononoke, nausicaa and spirited away

can you tell me a little about your darling avatar that has popped up recently? i love the photograph and the little dotted line edge. what made you choose it?

Hmm, i was just thinking the other day, as i looked through the member list, sorted by members that posted the most, that I was on the first page, up among the top 15 or so posters (congrats LMonet- you are #1 ) and almost everyone else had an avatar (honey, fp, rlutz, and rocky still don't have them).  I suddenly felt very left out.  So i browsed my computer for small images that i have been collecting. I liked this one the most- i think it was someone's avatar from another messageboard a while back and I saw it and saved it.  I thought it was so cute!

i know that you recently moved to brooklyn. where did you call home before you moved? where are you from originally? now that you've moved, what do you miss (if anything)?

I am from Maryland, i live outside of Annapolis.  Thats where i'm from, thats what I call home.  I miss:  my family the most, kayaking on the chesapeake bay's many lovely tributaries , my best friend who is from my hometown, wide open space and nature, and being near water.  Annapolis is very preppy, and in hs i didn't like it just because so many snobby girls were very preppy.  However, i've always had sort of a soft-side for preppiness and tradition (think new england, ivy leagues, gilmore girls, riding boots, family jewels) because of where i'm from- not that i'm any of those things listed, but because i grew up around it.  So yea, i miss that, in a strange way.  When people have money in NYC, i feel like its too flashy.  (my family is NOT rich by the way, middle class, but i grew up in an affluent area)

  • tell us about your new job!  you're working for a designer, right?  what's your typical day like?

I love my job.  I feel SO lucky to have it.  The designers I work for are so nice, and I really want to do my best and help them out.  I don't dread mondays, i'm excited for them (except the waking up early part , and its not even that early- have to be there by 10)  I may be doing anything on a given day- running samples back to the studio, dropping things off to the factories in the garment district, packing orders, last minute embroidery on a dress- it works out nicely because i'm business minded but also pretty artistic.

  • how did you get such amazing style??  have you always had such a knack for putting outfits together?  seriously, you pick out the best pieces and i love all your outfits on threadstyle.

Haha, I have no idea.  I used to watch Style with Elsa Klensch (sp?) when i was 12- so i've always been into it i guess (even though back then i wanted to either by a ballerina or a doll designer).  I think a lot of it is an extension of my personality- i am kind of a shy person, so i like to wear clothes that reflect what I like.  I notice well- made things.  I like fashion that you want to give to your children, partly because my mom has given me BEAUTIFULLY made things from the 70's that she found in Europe.  That kind of quality is more rare now, but i'm at the point in my life where I'm ok with paying for it, plus i always try to find deals or look on eBay.  I also used to be a shopaholic, and now i'm dealing with the repercussions.  I could have had like $6000 more in my savings if i hadn't bought as much from seventh grade through freshman year in college (i've always bought my own clothing- mom stopped buying my clothes in elementary school).  I literally could throw away 6 garbage bags of clothing.  The gluttony of my closet was disgusting to me and i didn't even feel like any of it was that amazing.  I never want to feel that way again- like i've thrown money away.  Thats why i'm pretty selective with what i buy.  I usually know instantly if i love something or not, but some things creep up on you and turn into your favorite things.  I'm glad you like my threadstyles- i like a lot of my pieces, but sometimes i don't have the "bridge" pieces that i wish i did to make the outfit work.

  • what's your favorite band?  tv show?  book?

Favorite band:  i don't know, this is a terrible question for me.  Some of my favorite artists are Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell.  I have an old soul.  I also love love CCR (like Lebowski!!!  hahaha) and who doesn't know every word to every Beatles song ?

Favorite tv show:  probably..Laguna beach right now   yes, i love that show.  such a shallow addiction.  I also really like The Simpsons, Family guy, real world/road rules challenges, Curb your enthusiasm, the ocdawson's creek in its heyday, buffy in its heyday, sex and the city, and my favorite: awesome shows on sea life on discovery.  i posted about the killer jellyfish show once.  i love shark week.  my favorite animals are whales.  Other favorite show topics: space, history, and crime mysteries.  i don't have a tv in nyc, so i'm trying to remember whats its like to have one...

book:  another hard one.  i liked a tale of two cities a lot, i love dickens's style of writing, its very beautiful.  i also like the great gatsby a lot and i capture the castle by dodie smith.  i'm a big fan of classics.   i like francesca lia block books for fun and i just read necklace of kisses(for those familiar with the weetzie bat books) and it was my favorite one to date.

What kind of wedding do you want (if any)?

Hmm, probably a pretty small, traditional one.  I would like to have a winter one if possible (Christmas time-ish, a little before) if I marry someone that celebrates Christmas, my bf is jewish so who knows.  I want to wear a simple but stunning dress.  If not, i would like to have an outdoors wedding in late spring, maybe in maryland somewhere.  i think the wedding i would want would depend on who i was marrying, so i try not to think about it too much.  i've always secretly wanted a wedding that was like a huge rowdy bonfire party, almost midieval, where everyone drinks beer around a bonfire and dances in a circle and celebrates all night long and the moon has to be a certain way or else my marriage will be doomed, etc.  But that is most likely not going to happen.

How did you meet your boyfriend?

i met him sophomore year in college, he lived on my floor.  we clicked instantly as friends, and he liked me right away, but i wasn't so sure.  we kissed quickly but i said i just wanted to be friends- i wasn't sure i liked him like that.  Luckily, he respected my wishes, we became good friends, i was always in his room hanging out with his friends, and as soon as he started seeing someone else, i realized i was in love with him and begged him to dump her and date me.  It worked

What would you name your kids (if you had any)?

oh man, this is a question i don't really think about.  every time i hear an amazing name, i forget about it.  I like the name Autumn- it is my favorite season.  i like hippie-ish nature-y names.  I like the name Jade, i like the name Aurora.  I also like really traditional names like Cassandra (and also the main character in I capture the castle!  loved her)

How is the transition to New York and out of college going?

its going pretty smoothly.  I'm really loving brooklyn, and i like living here.  i only miss having a group of friends, plus family nearby, i'm sure that will get better with time.  Having an awesome job helps.  if i was working some boring job, i would probably be a lot more miserable.  I do miss college though- college girls- live it up while you can!  meet as many people as you can- you never know who will be your best friend or BF/FH!  there are so many young people living near each other with similar interests and its awesome.

What do you want for Christmas?

i never really want too much for christmas- i have a bad habit of buying myself what i want.  To see my family, to see my friends, for snow, and maybe to run into some long lost friends while i'm back at home?  lately i've been excited thinking about presents to get for my family!  i'm stumped about what to get my 13 year old brother- i refuse to get him video games!  i've also been trying to think of presents to get the designers i work for- i know a present that would be perfect for one, but its kind of pricey, and i don't want to buy it unless i can find something just as nice for the other designer.

ohhh, i didn't know you were from annapolis.  it's such a cute town.  i secretly fantasized about moving there after i visited (not till i'm much much much older though).  my bf and i had one of our favorite meals there....at o'donnell's i think it was called.  it was an oyster bar with seafood.  now i'm craving crabcakes   ok, sorry for the rambling.

    here's my questions...

if you could pick three must have designer pieces, what would they be?  (ex. hermes scarf, burberry trench...)

It's so weird...after reading some of your posts I feel like you and I are very similar in a lot of ways.

I love that you love Zoolander, the Virgin Suicides, and The Royal Tennenbaums--all great movies.  Zoolander kills me--I love Will Farrell in it when he's talking about Katinka Inga Bogovana-na-na...cracks me up every time he says her name.

    ANYWAY...here are my ?s:

    What's your favorite color?

    Do/did you play any sports?

What's your favorite piece of artwork, if you have one?

What's your favorite thing to do on a Sunday morning?

What is your favorite part about living in Brooklyn / being in NY? work doesn't count because it's obviously awesome, and shopping isn't a fair answer.

But tell us more about the shopping...what is your favorite new store? a place that you had never been?

What were you like as a child?

well, i don't really remember!  my mom said I didn't have as many friends as my sister   its true though- she was the middle child and i was always the one that had to be "responsible".  I was also kind of shy and remember being intimidated by my fellow girlscouts!  there were some that i was scared to talk to- and i was in what, 3rd grade??  Geez!  I had a best friend that i had a falling out with in 7th grade, but until then, we had so much fun together- we would always do crafts together.  I had a group of 4 close friends and we would write notes to each other and have code names for the cute boys at our school.  This was until fifth grade.  I also really liked playing with my little ponies and loved The little mermaid and loved when my dad would read me the chronicles of narnia- one chapter each night of the whole chronicles.  i want to do that for my kids one day, or have their father read it to them.

What was your style like in HS/college?

My style now basically is what i was wearing junior/senior year of college.  It has gotten more refined as i've saved more money and started working, plus now that i have a base wardrobe, i have the space to splurge on a few cool pieces.  up until then, it was a buying frenzy.  I was sort of a "surfer girl" up through junior year of high school, and then i probably had similar taste to now, but def. not a very good wardrobe.  Sort of cute and casual.  i didn't buy expensive things really.  i wore tshirts with logos on them sometimes (roxy, ae, hurley, etc) that i would never do now.  its odd though, one of my friends wanted to nominate me for best dressed my senior year of hs, but looking back, i really don't think i was that well dressed.

What is your favorite meal to cook?

Hmmm, not much of a cooker.  I love putting veggie corndogs in toaster ovens!  So simple.  I also like cutting up all kinds of veggies and making omelettes or pasta with them.  i do LOVE to bake cupcakes though, from the magnolia bakery cookbook. i bake these when i go home and bring a bunch of them to all my friends/workplace/family, etc. because the recipe makes so many.

    To order at a restaurant?

Because I don't cook very often, i like to order things that i wouldn't really eat at home.  So most likely a meat based dish- rice and chicken, salmon, steak, etc.  i never really order pasta for this very reason.  i also love appetizers- calamari, crab dip, etc.  and my favorite thing in the world is steak tacos from Chipotle with just lettuce cheese and tomato!  yummmm, plus guacamole is my favorite favorite thing- so i like to order anything with guacamole, such as the southwestern pizza from California pizza kitchen.  i also like gorgonzola cheese + fruit + mixed greens + vinageraitte (sp?) salads.

What's the nicest thing that anyone's ever done for you?

I think people do little nice things for me all the time, and i try to do them back.  I thought it was very nice when you sent me the $20 J Crew coupon.   Also, the day you asked this question, i was just given the dress that i really wanted by my work. i mentioned that i loved it and wanted to order it, and as i was leaving, they ran after me and told me an extra sample dress was made by mistake in my size.  So they gave it to me!!  i love it and it means more to me that it was a gift.  the whole walk home i was smiling and thinking it was so nice, and then lo and behold, you asked me this question.

Do you have any role models you look up to?

not really- i dont have anyone that i admire on a daily basis.  I look up to my parents a lot.  i look up to my grandmom- she divorced my granddad when she was around 50 and has spent these past 20 years traveling (she's almost 70 now)  i've always been pretty individualistic (?), plus i know people aren't perfect, so i try to just admire individuals for what they are best at.  for example, i have role models in the business world (steve jobs, warren buffett) that i wouldn't necessarily call a role model because i dont know them and don't really know if they are great people (though i hear they are both pretty cool guys).

Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

i have no idea.  i'll be 32.  Hopefully married with a kid and a cute house that i've decorated with a cute garden and happy in my job.  maybe having my own business or freelancing so i can raise my children?  i'd like to live sort of a bomemian existence, seeing the world with my husband and kids and eating good food.  i'd also like to be well enough off that i don't HAVE to work and could afford a house or two, as well as seeing the world.

If you can travel anywhere, where would you go?

varies on a day to day basic.  right now i want to go to europe- paris (never been), iceland, ireland, the nordic countries, english countryside- i want to one day see the midnight sun and the northern lights.  i kind of prefer dark mysterious old beautiful places with lots of history.  and honestly, i would love to go to california.  i've never been.  and the national parks and rockie mountains.

What's your favorite thing to do on the weekend?

Resting!  getting my errands done, hanging out with my boyfriend, eating good food, going to shows.  i want to plan some weekend getaways, sometimes its nice to have nothing to do, but usually i prefer something to look forward to!  having my friends here was amazing.

what is your drink of choice when you go out?

i usually start off with a beer or two (i like bud light, guiness, pacifico the best) and then move on to gin and tonics when that starts to feel too heavy.  i also like cranberry and vodka.  when i'm at home, with friends or bf, i drink red wine- i love merlot and sangiovese.  don't like cabernet.  i don't usually drink with my meals though, so i rarely order wine with dinner.  i only do this if i'm 100% not tired, or else i'll fall asleep right after dinner.  i like margaritas on occasion, but never for a night out drinking, thats more of a "dinner at chevy's" kind of thing, haha.

    - what's your favorite expression/saying right now?

i say, "oh word?" way too often.  I also say "EFF!!" instead of "F*ck" all the time.  usually they are phrases from friends i don't mean to pick up, but inevitably do so.

    - what is your best bargain purchase so far this fall?

not really anything yet.  most of the things i've purchased so far have been things i've needed/loved, so i paid full price or slightly on sale.  plus i've been so busy with moving plus working, that i haven't really had time to scour sales or go vintage clothes shopping.  i haven't really shopped that much in general.  i think the most useful things i've bought have been that striped missoni-esque guage sweater, my black anthropologie bag, and that velvet brand brown wrap.

    - if you could learn one new hobby in the next 12 months, what would it be?

i would learn the violin.  i've always wanted to play violin but it requires time and energy and patience that i just don't currently have.

    Fav. color?

for clothes- blue, green, and red.  in general..maybe green?  i love all the different shades of greens, from chartruese to mossy green, ivy green, kelly green, aqua green, pine green, well, you get it...

What are your plans for the hoildays coming up?

to go home.  force my little brother to hang out with me and run errands with me.  girl time with my sister.  hanging out with my mom (she misses having someone to talk to!).  seeing my friends.  doing the little suburbia things i take for granted, like going to the mall to browse and get lunch.

    Fav peice of clothing?

hmm...so hard.  probably my vintage ski jacket from ebay.  it was only $8 and i wear it all the time.  it has a red mountain on one side.  i also love my missoni-esque guage cardigan. and my new black bag from anthropologie.

If you could pick anywhere to  live where would it be and why?

i dont know.  California for a while- kind of like in "the hills"- to see where my dreams take me.   haha.  don't know if i'd stay there too long.  maybe the northwest or northeast?  also paris for a while, i want to perfect my french. depends on where my friends/family are- home is where the heart is =)
