Here are some quick thoughts off the top of my head:
Who's dead?
We don't have conclusive evidence as to who has been 'lost forever.' We saw that Shannon was shot by Ana Lucia, however, she hasn't been confirmed to be dead (remember Charlie from last season? We thought he was dead, too, but he wasn't). Sawyer has a nasty infection and blood loss. Ana Lucia says, "he's dead already." Again, we haven't confirmed his situation. And lastly, Cindy, the tail section survivor who went missing last night while they were climbing up the hillside. This seems to best fit the bill of being 'lost forever.'
What I believe may happen with Sawyer and Shannon is that they will both arrive back at the Losties' camp at the same time (obviously, this will be the case since they are now with the Tailies) and Jack will have to choose who to operate on first (much like we saw in S2E1, where he had to choose between Shannon's dad and Sarah). After last night's back story on Shannon, we now know why she is the way she is and I actually like her character more.
What's the deal with Walt?
It almost seems like he is a long-range projection and not actually there. Every time we have seen him (with the exception of the last time in last night's episode), he has seemed ghostly and has spoken backwards. Incidentally, what he said last night in the first sighting was, "They're coming and they're close." The last time we saw him right before Shannon was shot, he wasn't speaking backwards and he seemed to actually be there. But he is starting to seem like he has some kind of "otherness" quality to him--stealthy, disappearing/reappearing at will, whispering, etc.
I think the Others take children to recruit and train them. They took Alex, they tried to take Aaron, they took Walt and they took the children who were with the Tailies. On a side note, did anyone else think that when the Tailies heard the Others whispering last night right after they climbed the hill that they were whispering, "Sawyer, Sawyer" among other things? I could have sworn I heard that.
Random Observations
Jack was the doctor who ran past Shannon and her stepmother in the hospital when the other doctor was telling them about Shannon's dad's accident.
Long-range projection is something that the Dharma initiative was studying, so Walt being a long-range projection makes sense. It could also explain why he is speaking backwards.
The next episode will show the Tailies and their parallel experience to the Losties. I think we might find out that Ana Lucia was a cop in her former life. From the previews it looks like the Others can just snatch people away in a second (like they did to Cindy) without anyone noticing at all. Creepy, creepy!
That's all I have at the moment, but I'm sure I'll think of more.
eh, after all the hype the episode kind of sucked. I think Cindy is "lost forever"- def. fits the spoilers better. They never explicitly said someone would die.
Is it just me, or did Shannon's wound not look like it came from a gun? It seemed way to big/open. I don't think Ana Lucia did it.
I like Shannon way more now. She seems so inncocent and helpless. And her stepmother was a major bitch.
with walt- did sayid really see him? or did he just tell sahnnon that so she wouldn't get pissed off at him again? if he really was just a vision of shannon's, how are they going to kill her off without losing that whole plot line?
AL told Libby "remember what they did to us?" what the hell did they do? it seemed person, yet they weren't harmed. I don't know about the whole snatching away part... maybe, but how would that explain Goodwin with the spear through his chest? (and to me, shannon's chest looked more like his did than it should have if she was shot)
eta: another reason I don't think shannon is dead- her falshbacks last night created more openings in her backstory- it didn't resolve it. so what did she end up doing? did she go to NY? we know at some point she started using all her boyfriends to get the money- how did that come about? how exactly did she end up in australia?

I don't think that Sayid saw Walt. I think he definitely heard the whispers (but he had heard them before during last season), but I think he was just trying to appease Shannon.
As for the Tailies, I forgot to add this before, I think Libby is an Other. Kind of like Ethan was to the Losties. She was right in front of Cindy when they were climbing up the hill and Cindy handed her the walking sticks. And then Cindy disappeared. I just find something off about her.
As for Ana Lucia, I'm pretty sure it was her her shot Shannon, just from the looks on her face and everyone else's faces. If it wasn't her, it was Libby, who I don't think we saw in the final shot of the Tailies, Michael and Jin. And I would love for Sayid to go all crazy Iraqi soldier on Ana Lucia. He's a man who's now (possibly) lost two loves, or at least his current love is seriously wounded. He's going to have it out for whoever did that. If it's Libby, then maybe he'll off her, especially after they realize that she's an Other. I suppose next week, we'll see if she was actually on the plane. But then again, she could have been. Afterall, she's a clinical psychologist (um, BF Skinner, Dharma Intiative anyone?).
I love this show!!!
ETA: Did anyone else notice that even though Aaron is not supposed to be raised by anyone other than Claire, that there seems to be a few more people than just Claire involved? First Charlie, now Locke.
ooh- now that you mention that about Libby...I like it! she does have an ethan-like quality about her. do you remember what/if ethan said he did in the "real" world? was it something similar?
Oh, I totally want Sayid to go crazy on AL. I can't stand her. At first I though she def. shout Shan., but when I think about it more, I don't know. Didn't they say someone would be accused but the real killer would be revealed in 2 weeks? What if AL shot the gun, but it missed her, or just grazed her? she and everyone else might think she did it even if she didn't. or the shocked look could have been at them seeing the real "killer" and AL shot that person... who knows? I'm just wary of taking the whole thing at face value...my bet is on the writers screwing with our heads.
Do we know what Shannon did for a living at the time the plane crashed? I don't remember if they ever said....I think I just assumed she was a model or something. I don't remember them saying anything about her being a dancer, though.
ILoveChoo, I don't remember if Ethan ever actually said what he did in the real world. I'll have to go back and look at the DVD's.
gruiz, I also don't remember any reference to Shannon and a career. The only thing that I remember was that she would con men for money and tried to get money from her stepmom. Which, after last night's episode, we know why. Her stepmom was a royal biatch!
I loved last night's episode. It was a little slow compared to some of the other episodes in the past, but I liked learning more about Shannon. Her backstory made me sympathize with her a lot more than before. I'm with you guys that Shannon may not actually be dead. We know she's injured, but she may not be dead yet. And Nyla--the issue with Jack having to decide which one to help first could come back.
The Claire/Locke/Charlie story in this episode seemed a little weak to me. Hard to explain...but it didn't quite fit in well with the rest of the episode and seemed like a distraction. Charlie's jealousy seemed a little built up in news releases and seemed like it didn't amount to much last night.
That whole thing with Cindy disappearing was just weird. And there's something strange about Libby as well. Her role so far has been totally meaningless, yet they've given her speaking parts and gone so far as to name her, which they don't do with everyone on the show, which leads me to think we'll learn a lot more about her and it should be interesting.
Oh, and last night's episode just made me love Sayid more. It's hard to say I have a favorite person on the show because there are so many interesting people, but Sayid is right up at the top of my favorite list right now.

I think that possibly the Claire/Locke/Charlie scenario was setting up for things to come. Remember, Locke knows what's in those Mary statues, but Charlie doesn't know that he knows that. I think this is a subplot that will grow further in future episodes. And as for the press and all their hype. Eh, I don't believe 'em. They're all saying that Shannon is dead today. I think they're wrong.
I feel like they are doing with Libby what they did with Ethan. I wonder what Libby's last name is. Does anyone know? We could plug it into an anagram wizard and see if it's anything like Ethan Rom.
And yeah, I totally Sayid! But Jack is still my favorite and I was said to only get a small glimpse of him in last night's episode.
Okay, I just popped into the boards over at www.oceanicflight815.com and there are theories flying around that Shannon was stabbed and Ana Lucia shot whoever it was that stabbed Shannon. This makes sense to me. And I stand by my conclusion that it's Libby.

Ooooooooooooh!!! Creeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeepy! That seriously gave me shivers!
Okay, I just went to ABC's site and when you go under show info and cast info they have added both Ana Lucia and Libby. Both Shannon and Sawyer are still there. They also give a last name for all of the characters, except Libby!! This character is an Other. I'm convinced! And neither Shannon nor Sawyer are dead. Mr. Eko is also there. Mysteriously missing: Bernard and Rose.
Oh, and when you click on Libby's name for character info, it says, "coming soon."
ETA: this little blurb was under Jack's info on this site. Keep in mind this is ABC's official site.

Okay, I just popped into the boards over at www.oceanicflight815.com and there are theories flying around that Shannon was stabbed and Ana Lucia shot whoever it was that stabbed Shannon. This makes sense to me. And I stand by my conclusion that it's Libby.
Mr. Eko

thats what I think. It did NOT look like a gun wound. My bet is on Libby too, since she wasn't in that final scene. Makes total sense.
I don't think Mr. Echo is an other. He's not creepy enough. Plus, he hid from them. I think he might be more of a Danielle type- survivor from the drug plane maybe?

Was Mr. Eko in the final scene?? I can't remember. But he has the same 'coming soon' info listed as LIbby on the ABC site. And he does seem to have some super human strength.
Okay, just for kicks, I plugged Mr. Ecko (I know it's supposedly spelled Eko, but I was curious) into an anagram finder and here are some of the things it came up with:
Euthanized US Marshal after a botched mercy killing attempt by Sawyer Did anyone else realize that he euthanized the Marshall?? I never knew that!!!
In that scene you see Jack go back in the tent after Sawyer shot the Marshall in the lung. I *think* that Jack then suffocates the guy because you see him walking out of the tent later looking upset.
