At about 6 p.m. I was driving on Union Turnpike, through the intersection of Woodhaven Boulevard, when a car going in the opposite direction, attempted to make a left turn onto Woodhaven when my car slammed into the passenger side door.
When I entered the intersection, the light had just turned yellow, so I had time to make it through before it turned red. I was going less than 40 mph. The Hyundai was hidden behind a large SUV who was also making the left turn in front of it so I did not see the car there. I went around the truck just to slam into the white car. I only had about a second to hit the brake but it did no good.
Immediately my airbags went off. My car was filled with what at the time I thought was smoke, but wound up to be dust from the bags. I turned off the car grabbed my purse, and got out of the car pretty quickly, thinking it might explode.
I got to the sidewalk and noticed the driver's door of the Hyundai was open and I could not see the driver. I walked back to get a look to see where he was and if he was okay and saw that he was lying on the ground, motionless. Right next to me a young man stood, calling 911 on his cell phone.
I touched the man asking if he was okay, but he did not respond. His eyes were closed but I could tell he was breathing. I wanted to cry.
I called Gary immediately and he was very upset. He asked me if I was okay. I told him I would cal him back later.
I looked at my car, a red 2004 Saturn Ion. The entire front end was crushed. I felt bad for my car. She had been a really good, safe car. Luckily I had my seat belt on.
In the next instance I noticed a lot of people around looking as I stood on the corner. And undercover police car was passing by and stopped to assist the driver of the Hyundai. One of the officers stood by directing traffic around the scene. Everyone started asking if I was okay and I said "yes, I am only concerned for that guy", motioning to the man on he ground.
It took about 15 minutes for the ambulance to get to the scene. After speaking to the man one of the EMT's said to me that he think he's going to be okay, that he's probably just in shock. Later on, on police officer said the same thing. I started to relax a little.
Another ambulance came and check my vitals and other stuff. My left hand was slightly bruised and swollen, but that was all. I declined going to the hospital.
During the next hour or so, the cops took my information, I called Gary again a few times (he was still at work in NJ), and I called Raquel a couple of times. Eventually one of the ambulances drove off with the Hyundai driver and the other one left. One of the police officers drove both cars from out of the intersection. They called for tow trucks which came pretty quickly.
After returning my documents, the cops said I could go, to just call the precinct tomorrow and get the police report. The tow truck driver was kind enough to drop me off by my house and I was able to make it back into the house before 9 p.m. Gary walked into the house about 5 minutes after me.
I feel like shit. Sure, the guy made an illegal move and the accident wasn't my fault, but I feel like shit all the same. I am sitting here typing this while trying not to cry. I have not been in a car accident since I was about 10 or 11.
I am glad I am ok. But I loved my car and will miss it. And now I have no way to get to school. I am gonna have to find a train or bus or something.
I want to crawl into a whole and disappear for a while.
ETS: The box is me, the blue is the car I hit, the brown is the SUV.
Iam so glad you were okay, i know how you feel somewhat I was in a automobile but noone was hurt I was driving and a deer come out and i made a attempt to not hit him but i lost control and went off the side of the road and hit a tree and fence i was okay i had quite a conusion on my head but my truck was all smashed up it really was scary and i did not want to drive for a while. I hope I did not make you feel worse i just wanted to share with you
You are in my thoughts and prayers and I hope everything is works out xoxoxox
OMG, Irene. I feel so bad for you. What a traumatic situation. I hope you feel better today. I've been in 2 serious accidents, and I know they stay with you. They leave you shaken up whether you were seriously injured or not.
So glad you are okay! It really sucks that Gary was still at work and couldnt come be with you.. It is hard to go through something chaotic and not have him there, I'm sure.
DH was just in a bad accident on Sunday (details in General). It really is a scary thing. Did the police and/or witnesses confirm for you that you have no fault in the accident? They did for my hubby, and that was one of the only things that comforted us that night.
ugh, i've been in two bad car accidents (not bad is in fatal, but cars totaled, very scary, etc.) and one VERY near experience that still freaks me out to driving to this day. The one thing I took from it- my car (and my bf's car) had to go to keep me alive. My VW jetta was my baby, i loved it so much, but I doubt i'll ever feel that way about a car again.
I'm glad everyone was ok. Give yourself some time off the road if it helps. What was that guy doing? Was he trying to make a U-turn? He really should not have been turning!
Thanks for the well wishes ladies. I really appreciate them.
After speaking with Geico, Gary and I are feeling a lot better. They will cover the accident (we weren't sure because I am not on the insurance policy) and said that I will only take 10-15% of the fault since was going straight and the other driver was turning. Yay! They said we don't have rental coverage on our policy and that is fine. I don't feel like driving right now anyway.
I also spoke to the person we bought our cars from, Roxanne at Saturn of Massapequa. She has always been fabulous. Once I told her that the car was totalled, she immediately offered to help with the insurance if there were any problems. Sher explained our GAP insurance through GMAC. I love her. I told her we will be coming in in a few weeks or a couple of months, after this issue is settled to get another car, possible used. She said no problem.
I spoke to my grandmother who keeps insisiting that I not get another car. I had to repeatedly explain to her that it is almost impossible to get to school from my house - I would have to take 4 buses. For the rest of this semester I am gonna have to leave for school directly from work, take the R train to Woodhaven Boulevard and then take the 88 bus to school. It sucks, but you do what you gotta do.
I have to go to the doctor today. I appear to have hurt my right thumb. I cannot put pressure on it because it hurts. So I may have nerge damage or something, will have to see.
Tomorrow morning we are of to Tampa, hooray!!! I really need this long weekend. I want to lay on the beach, under the sun and relax.
Wow - I'm so sorry this happened to you. Thank goodness the insurance is covering everything. Car accidents are so terrible. (((hugs))) I hope your trip to Tampa helps you relax and forget about all this ickiness. Have a great time!
Ooooh I would be so mad! I have a 2004 Saturn Ion too, and would be steaming if it got ruined because it's a special color! I had recently been thinking I had wasted money on the GAP insurance, but after hearing your ordeal, you never know! I don't know but that driver of the other car just happening to get out of his car and be lying on the ground is a little overdramatic like he is faking it to get insurance money.
