Do leather jackets/coats actually keep you warm? Obviously, some are lined and some aren't, but--in general--are they warm? They seem like they would not keep you warm (plus they are so smooth that they'd actually be cold at the time when you put them on).  Just curious.

I never wear leather jackets. I am curious too. Maybe you can buy one and have a try. So you will know the truth.

I wear my leather coat here in Chicago until December or so (until it dips under 40 degrees.) I'll break it out again in the spring around March. Now granted, I have a thicker leather button down type and not one of those thinner moto jackets. I suspect that mine keeps me warmer than once of those would. Of course, I've had mine for almost 8 years now and with the developing patina, it just looks better with age.

I wouldn't use mine much below 50 degrees or so. It does a pretty good job of blocking wind, but I definitely need layers underneath it. I think if you could find one with a quilted lining, it would probably be a pretty warm coat.

Thanks. That's what I thought. :)

My husband has one with a removable lining, so it can be worn even in the really cold weather; maybe you can find something like that. Mine blocks the wind okay, but I'd say the 40 degree mark is about accurate. Maybe 35 in the sun.

Plus, most leather coats are waist length. When it's really cold out, I need something to keep the lower half of me warm too.

All I can picture in my mind are movie scenes in which the too-cool-for-school characters in leather jackets are freezing their a**es off while smoking a cigarette outside.  LOL!
