Nordstrom Returns?
Permalink Closed

Now I know from listening to you girls before that Nordies has an amazing return policy.. But I want to tell you my situation and get your opinion before I drive 1 hour to the nearest Nordies to try to return this..

About 2 months ago I bought what I thought was a great brown, long sweater from BP. I was planning to belt it and wear with jeans. It was $58. Still have tags (unattached) and receipt (somewhere). I wore it for the first time earlier this week and it was a disaster. By the end of the day, under my armpits was practically threadbare. It pilled worse than the Express blended sweaters (that I know we all have and HATE) I probably wore it for 9 hours and it looks like it was shredded by my dog and ran over by a truck.

Am I going to be able to return this? It is just such poor quality!

Thanks for your help! I don't want to have to drive all the way there to be told that I'm out of luck!

give them a call and talk to someone before you drive out there. explain exactly what you just told us, get the associate's name and find out if she will be working when you plan on coming to make the return so you can ask for her when you get there. then you don't have to explain all over again to someone else.

... and i think they WILL return it for you.

they'll return it.  i had a bp sweater from them, no receipt, no tags, 2 years old, pilled badly, they gave me $40 in cash, no problems.  It was almost spooky, they believed me so easily.

I think you should be able to return it.  I just returned to Macy's some 7s I wore a few times that started to tear near the pocket.  There wasn't a hole formed but it was forming and they took it back. I think the girl was unsure at first because I came in with a shredded receipt taped back together but that's another story.

u should be fine. if you have the tag still on, there's nothing they wont take back... i once took back a pair of earrings i bought from there that cracked... (i had them for atleast a month but they were super flimsy) and they took those back..

i love nordstrom. =D

but since you live so far away, maybe it would be a good idea to give them a call so you can have some peace of mind before u make that long drive.

You can return ANYTHING, in any condition, after any length of time.

I used to work there. I have given customers cash back for items I watched them steal. I have given customers cash back for items that came from other stores (i.e., had the Banana Republic tag still sewn in). It is store policy that they return anything and everything. You'll be fine.

Isn't it nuts!? The worst thing I have done (and really the only bad thing) is that I took back a pair of shoes that I had had (and worn multiple times) over the course of over a year, because the toe part cut into my foot. A fact that I knew when I bought them but was in denial about. I took them in and explained the situation and walked out with my $160 in cash. And the girl was perfectly nice to me. I justify it by thinking about how much $$ I spend there every year and because I know it is part of their business strategy and they really don't suffer over returns.

How did you know how much to give if it was from another store? Or did they use a Nordstrom receipt and pretend the item was the one on the receipt?

i just returned a sweater that i wore 2 times and had dry cleaned.  after i got it back from the cleaners, i found a small hole near the wrist.  i still had the receipt but no tags and they gave me back the $$$ for it and i ended up purchasing a blazer that day.

you'll be fine- they'll take it back.

In one case (the stealing) the item had a tag and was from our store. In the other case, I believe we ended up finding a "similar" item (i.e. one that wasn't from banana republic) and using that price.

I should add, lest people think they are completely nuts, that Nordstrom does track "suspicious" returns, and after a certain number of instances the customer is asked not to return to the store. (I believe that's how it works.)

I just returned a Stila eye shadow compact that I bought 2 years ago.  It was one of the ones that you buy and just keep replacing the eye shadow pans.  Up until recently, I would just go into the store and they would take the old pan out and replace it with a new one.  They would bang the compact thing on the counter to get the eye shadow pan out.  I tried to do it at home and ended up smashing my eye shadows.  They let me exchange it for one like this that has holes in the bottom to get the pans out and also replaced all my eye shadows, even the non-broken ones because the lady at the counter wasn't a Stila employee and couldn't figure out how to take the pans out either!

i used to work there, too, when i was in college.  one time, during a sale when the rest of us salesgirls were away from the desk, one of our stock guys got roped into doing a return for a pushy customer.

when we all came back up to the desk, we were like, what is this piece of used workout wear sitting here on the counter with no tags? this piece of used workout wear with an inside label reading "from the jaclyn smith collection, exclusively for kmart."  that story still makes me laugh.  i think she only got about $20 cash for it.

they instruct their employees to take ANYTHING back.  worn, used, 10 years old and drycleaned a million times (i took that return once)...absolutely anything.  their business plan is that they take the loss on that stuff and more than make up for it with the amount of sales they generate because their return policy is so generous.  i have heard that it has tightened up a little (when i worked there was 8 years ago) but still.

i also think it has to do with the particular store and how many bogus returns they get hit with each day.  i had a stila lipstick that i had tried on when i got home and decided it looked terrible on me in the natural light and tried to return it.  it had literally been swiped once, but obviously they couldn't re-sell it--but makeup counters take stuff back all the time, even at more strict stores like barney's, because things make people break out or whatever.  but this particular salesperson looked at me like i was a criminal and rolled her eyes and was like "no way, that is gross."  um, ok.

It's crazy how they take everything back, sometimes I feel bad for taking advantage of it. I mean I never return things that are really old or worn, but if something like a sweater starts pilling bad in which case a lot of BP sweaters do for me then I will exchange it for something else. I remember the first time I had to return something to Nordstrom, my sister actually asked me to return a pair of white Puma sneakers that turned yellow and I was so nerveous about doing it. They returned it without a problem and even said thank you at the end.

I think perhaps they have gotten stricter at certain locations.

I hardly ever shop at Nordstroms since there isn't one in my area but I had a dress from last year that someone gave me and I never wore it. I asked here and a bunch of ladies said they would definitely take it back but when I tried to return it the woman told me that she couldn't accept it because it was missing a tag - or maybe it was a sticker. It had the Nordstrom price tag so I'm not sure what the problem was but the woman said they couldn't even give me store credit. If I lived close to a Nordstrom I would be tempted to try again but it's really difficult for me to get to one.
