I've never done it, but I work at a local bar/restaurant/pizza place and we have secret shoppers that come in- thanks to my lovely boss...

I know that they work for some company, that is not local, but local people can work for them and do it by mail. The company pays for your meal, tips, drinks, etc...  I thought about doing it for a company that shops retail, but you only get paid like $15 a pop, the survey is loong and you're supposed to buy certain things, like razors, walkman, whatever the company says.

If you have the time and feel like it, I would check it out, but if not, it's not all that worth it.

Secret shoppers got me fired from California Pizza Kitchen when I was serving in college!  It was a great job and I was really good at it.  But the only thing was, we had these "steps of service" that we HAD to follow at EVERY table in case it was a secret shopper.  Well it was trying to offer like EVERY corse and all the expensive things we had and you know when you start that at some tables they just roll their eyes and stop you mid sentence.  Well, I got a shopper I guess, I didn't know at the time because they are "secret" and the report they sent in was totally bogus!!  I even remembered the table and they totally just made stuff up and I got fired because of it. A lot of people there did.  It was aweful, having someone who just wanted a free dinner enjoy the food and then just make up some lame stuff to get their $.  If you are going to do it, do it right and be honest and remember everything.  Someone's job may be on the line.
