amazing but seriously expensive designer shoes: are they worth it?

The following is a guest post from FabSugar on Lucky.

Would you spend $3,495 dollars on a pair of shoes? Maybe if your net worth hovers north of a few million dollars, you would, but for the rest of us, something like the sculpted resin and leather Alexander McQueen shoes remain something to gawk at (and perhaps dream about). We searched for five pairs of outrageously fabulous yet wildly expensive shoes that are available right now online. These aren't the most expensive shoes ever — the jewel-encrusted, million-dollar-plus shoes we see on red carpets aren't usually sold online — but they're serious investments. Take a look and tell us: are they worth it?

These Alexander McQueen shoes ($3,495) are like something a white fairy would wear in our fashion dreams. Sculpted resin leafs make up the soles, which is why the price tag is so high.

These tricolor, suede, Swarovski crystal-covered heels fromGiuseppe Zanotti ($1,495) have an '80s pop appeal.

These animal-print calf-hair Brian Atwood heels ($1,450) are embellished with real ostrich plumes and have a grosgrain ribbon lace-up front.

These silk pumps from Brian Atwood ($4,970) boast hundreds, maybe thousands, of tiny Swarovski crystals and are available for preorder.

These Fendi booties ($1,750) are covered in raccoon fur for a seriously glam après-ski look.

If you could buy any of these shoes, which ones would you buy?

I think the McQueen shoes are pretty spectacular, but by no means would I get a good cost per wear at $3,500!

I don't love any of the ones posted. The McQueens are like art, but they don't make my heart yearn for them.

THESE, however:

McQueen Faithful

are TDF. And a very reasonable $600-ish, down from $1300 or so.

Of the five, the last four seem fairly ordinary, although expensive. Crystals, feathers and fur on shoes is nothing new.

But, the McQueen shoes are art and truly unique. I wouldn't buy them even if I had the money, as they seem costumey and not wearable. Although, if I had a huge mansion and tons of dough, I can see myself padding around the house is a beautiful silk dress-meets-nightgown that is roman inspired and just having to have these shoes...

I prefer to think that if I did have the huge mansion and ability to buy $3500 shoes that my occupation would be 'philanthropist' therefore buying these shoes in the first place would be in insult to my profession.

If I could just afford to shop at places that carry $3500 shoes (or even feel comfortable popping into such a store), that wouldn't be all bad!

Maybe if I was fabulously wealthy. I could see someone like that buying them for art. Maybe displaying them in a dressing room (since all fabulously wealthy people have massive dressing rooms.) I don't care how much money I had, I could NEVER wear them. I would be so worried that they might get scuffed or damaged in anyway.

On the other hand, I get nervous wearing shoes that I get on sale for $70...

If you had a mega diamond necklace, it would be beautiful draped over top of the shoes, in the dressing room, as art...

Can't you just see one of these necklaces being stored and displayed on the shoes? Of course, you'd need a butler/security personnel to watch over them at all times. But, in this little fantasy, crime doesn't exist...

I think I might need a horde of security guards to protect my "art." Maybe off season Olympic athletes. In tight t-shirts.evileye

The sacrifices one makes for art.
