Cool flooring ideas for kitchen besides wood?

Hey girls!  We are redoing our kitchen floors and we were going to do wood but it will be too much trouble to match it with the rest of the house.  We have some dark grey slate flooring but were worried about it being too dark for our kitchen (b/c it's so small) and our floor ppl are suggesting tile.  I'm not a huge fan of tile though.  Is there any nice flooring, tile or otherwise, that I should consider?  We need to pick it out on Saturday, so I'd love to hear your ideas as soon as possible.  TIA!


BTW, I am going to do a search for a pic of bamboo flooring like ayo is considering.  Ayo, did you get it?  What do you think?

I know some people were talking about cork not too long ago; what about that?


Could you do a lighter shade of slate?

Not sure the look you're going for, but I really like brick pavers as an alternative to tile.

How about heated ceramic?? Saw this on a decorating show recently. My cousin has it in her kitchen and bathroom and loves it.

Maybe a laminate faux-stone?  We have it in our bathroom and I it - looks great and so easy to take care of.

They're just like the top layer of bricks, I think they can be used inside or out.  They have them at Lowes in the same aisle as the tile, etc.  I really wanted to use them in a bathroom I'm redoing, but the brick color ended up not being good with the rest of the colors.

Hi alb :).


Actually I have not gotten the bamboo flooring yet. The house is still being built (won't be ready till summer) so it might take some time before we can actually put flooring in. I'm just such a "planner" I am researching way in advance.


I do plan on getting a sample of it though. I've also heard wonderful things about cork flooring.

Have you thought of Pergo? It's very durable and you can it in either wood look alike, or ceramic looking stuff, or even linoleum looking. It's very easy because it snaps together.

I love going to Lowe's to look at flooring.  Maybe you should take a trip if your haven't yet.  They have some nice ceramic tiles, and very beautiful granite and marble too.

Hey everyone!  Thanks for the ideas.  I'm thinking some type of stone or marble, or a lighter slate.  I don't want to do cork b/c I had that in my parents house growing up and I'm tired of it.  I haven't seen heated ceramic or brick pavers, so I will look into that though.  Thanks for the ideas.  LMonet--that flooring doesn't look like faux at all!

I know!  And, it's never cold like real stone.  Another plus is that things don't break as often if you drop them on this stuff.  My foundation and perfume bottles are pretty happy about that .
