FH went to the hospital for high blood pressure last night and needs to watch his sodium intake for the next week or so... does anyone have any idea of dinners that will taste good and aren't too high in sodium? I don't want to feel like we are eating "old people food"...
My family all has high bp so I grew up eating low sodium meals. I hardly use salt on anything at all. I recommend replacing salt with another seasoning if you need the flavor. lemon pepper (the kind w/o salt) or garlic powder(love it in or on potatoes mashed or baked...) We eat alot of chicken and turkey. I always make a steamed veggie. what about white rice and use low sodium soy sauce. What ever your do don't eat anything pickled, olives, pickles pepperoncinis... Also stay away from sodas even diet has sodium in it. It may be boring at first but you will adjust and feel better. If you feel like you are eating gross bland food add cayanne or pepper or some other spice. Make your own marinara sauce and salad dressings. I really do not care for low sodium packaged foods but you may want to try some to see what you think.
thanks- that's great. He'll def. have to lay off the soda- I tell him all the time but he still drinks like 4 liters a day! So gross. Good idea on using seasonings to give flavor- I am used to cooking for myself (I have low bp and actually NEED sodium, so this is gonna be fun ) but told him I would cook for him, since he hates to and pretty much just eats convenience foods.
I cook like this for my brother who doesn't care what he eats and would complain that I wasn't using salt and he doesn't even notice.
If he is a soda adict, i have tendencies, try to swich to iced tea, so he still gets the caffine. you can even make sweet tea if he needs the sugar. Sweet tea is way better than adding suger to tea when you drink it. imo
