Lately I've been toying with the idea of getting my nose pierced... anyone have any thoughts, experiences, pro or con? For example, how much of a pain is it to remove the stud, say if I had to go to an interview or something... and relatedly, do you think something like that would be a big deal to an employer? I know my boss at the law firm told me she didn't give an otherwise great candidate a second interview because she had a nose piercing (and no, she was not South Asian--I asked!). But I am going to be working in a creative industry in a year and a half, where I suspect it wouldn't really be a big deal. Anyone have experiences with it?

I used to have my nose pierced. I would say as far as people judging you because of it that can go either way depending on your industry. Generally it is accepted I think. If you are planning to do it I would give yourself about a month to heal before having to remove it for any period of time. The only time it hurts taking it out and putting it back is in the first week or so, after that it may hurt a little if you leave it out too long.

I have taken mine out for several years now. I do have a hole/scar on my nose where it was. not super noticable but a few random people have asked about it.

I say go for it if you don't like it you can take it out. I recommend going to a peircing/tatoo type place instead of somewhere they use a gun to pierce. The needle the piercer uses is cleaner than the gun(less chance of infection) and the needle is less traumatic than the gun. Have fun with it!

I got mine pierced in April or May ...

I really love it - I just have a tiny tiny little diamond-y thing in there - sometimes people don't even notice it.

Even though I've had it this long though, it STILL hurts to take in and out - it's not totally unbearable, but I don't do it unless there is no way I can get around it.  If this helps you gauge ...

When I go home for Christmas it will be a big deal that I have a nose ring (my mom stopped talking to me for two weeks when I got my ears double pierced!)

I considered taking it out during the day and just leaving it in at night - but dealing with that twice a day is going to be too much pain!  i'm just going to have to face the music.

That aside, as far as people "judging you," i think it depends on your ring and your industry.  in creative industries like mine and like you said you'll be in, i haven't experienced any adverse reactions --- but like i said, i also have a very tiny stud.  Bigger ones might make a difference ... i'm not sure.

all of this said, i love mine!  i  get compliments on it all the time - even my brother said that he really likes it.

i have had my nose pierced for 7 years.  when i got it done i was at an earth day fest and pretty drunk, and it hurt like hell.  they did it with a needle, not a gun.  but it only hurt when they were doing the actual piercing.  afterward, it never hurt at all.  they made me put in a huge hideous hoop with a ball on it (kind of like the ones they put in belly buttons) at the beginning and i kept that in for at least 6 mths.

i changed it to a smaller silver hoop, then to a small silver stud, which i have had for a few years.  most people don't even notice my nose is pierced.  i have had people that i've known for years all of a sudden notice it and ask me if i did it recently.

i had a few negative reactions when i had the first big hoop, but since i switched to a small stud, i have only had compliments about it.  people like the subtlety.  i think that if you wear a small stud and you are otherwise appropriately dressed, it shouldn't be an issue, if it even gets noticed.

I love those teeny tiny diamond studs. If I had the guts, I'd get one.

One of our super-cool Spanish teachers (she's older, too.. around mid-50s) has one. It's technically against the rules for teachers to have visible non-ear piercings, but she's been there four years and I don't think anyone's even noticed, it's so small.

I had mine done about a year and a half ago and I took it out permanently in order to find a job. I know the place i currently work wouldn't care if I had one, but I know they would not have hired me had I had it to begin with. If that makes any sense. So I am definitely going to get it re-pierced within the next couple of weeks because I miss it so much and I loved it when I had it!

Just a question to those that have it. Which side of your nose do you have pierced. I had my right side done and some people thought that was odd. Is it?

I would totally do this if I actually wanted to draw attention to my nose (but since it's my least favorite feature, I haven't).  I think it looks cute if there is a really, really tiny diamond that's barely noticeable and in creative industries, I don't think it's a big deal at all.

i've been debating getting mine done for about a year, too--i love the really teeny-tiny diamond (like kelly clarkson's, LOL) that you can't see until you are up very close.  i am considering starting to interview soon, though, so that's the main reason i have been holding off.  i think the really small studs look so pretty.

i don't think it matters which side you have done.  my old b-f has his right side, and he has a thin silver ring in it.  it's very cute on him.

i used to have my nose pierced- i actually did it twice!  sidenote: i made the mistake of getting it pierced in the same place the second time.  going through the scar tissue is not fun!  it bled and i almost passed out! eek!

it doesn't hurt very much (at least the first time!).  i'd say it hurt just a little bit more than getting a navel piercing.  it was a little bit tender afterwards, just like any piercing.  you should definitely have it pierced with a needle- a gun is way too traumatic and leads to scarring.  as far as removing the stud, i was never able to do that for an extended period of time.  mine would start to close up almost instantaneously!  i never took mine out unless i was just cleaning it or switching to a different stud.

i have to say though, i feel like my body "rejected" my nose piercings.  the first time i had it done, it lasted about 5 months.  then one night while i was sleeping, it just pushed itself out (i had noticed that day that it kept "working its way out" a little bit if that makes any sense) and the next morning i couldn't get it through anymore!  the second time, i had it for about 3 1/2 months and then the same thing happened... very weird.  and i do have a little scar now, but i hardly ever notice it or think about it.

i think tiny diamond studs are so cute!  go for it!

Ooh, I love them. Go for it and post pics when you can! Same with you dixiegirl!

I would get one but they are against dress code at our school. Besides, I just got my navel done (about three months ago), and another ear piercing (last friday), so I should wait a while. And give my mom a break, LOL.

oooh, all your posts are so encouraging! My best friend scared me by telling me how she wanted to get hers done, but was afraid of developing a keloid (which I guess is some kind of really prominent scar). I think I need to do some more research before I do it. And I won't do it for a few months anyway... I'll be interviewing in the spring so I think I can hold off until I have a new job on lock down... a good way to celebrate, right?

i used to have mine peirced and i thought it hurt like hell. but i looked so cute. now, i want to get it done again, but fear that i'm too old. as for the scar, it's tiny, and i'm not sure if anyone would ever notice if i didn't tell them it was there.

I finally got mine done! I had an appointment to go today but ended up walking in yesterday & getting it done.

My advice is make sure you go to a super clean place. The piercing studio I went to is almost like a doctor's office. It is so clean & everyone knows exactly what they're doing & walk you step by step through everything & show you exactly what they'll be using to do it. Also make sure to go somewhere that uses a needle instead of a gun!!!

It didn't hurt like I thought it would. It was more an uncomfortable feeling than pain. (And I have a really low tolerance for pain.) It just felt like a ton of pressure & then it was over. It was somewhat sore for about ten minutes afterwards but that was it. Now I can't even notice that it is there!

I'm just having to learn to take care of it properly & be careful...like this morning when i was washing my face & scrubbed over it & it hurt like hell.

Go for it!!!!

this is a dopey quesstion, but how do you find a really good, clean place? My only associations with piercing are Claire's boutique in the mall, with the gun, and the shady piercing/tattoo places on St. Marks in NY (not a good scene).

definitely ask around. i haven't checked into it but i know good piercers are licensed so finding a website with names or something like that is probably a good place to start.

expect to pay more at a good place. i paid $60 for mine. the shady place charges $20 but i've been in there before & it just does not seem clean to me. i don't want anything dirty poking through my body haha!

my main advice is to go somewhere that uses a needle instead of the gun. the gun is supposed to be the absolute worst way to pierce your nose for some reason. if you're unfamiliar with the peircing places then just go check them out first! if they're decent then they will allow you to look around & you can ask them to show you what they use & how they sterilize everything.

it might even be worth driving a little ways to somewhere good rather than risk getting an infection or be pierced by someone who doesn't know what they're doing. i know the claire's here isn't allowed to do piercings other than ears, but maybe it is different in your state?

wow sorry that was very long winded!!
