alrighty...so my husband just started his job (big scary corporate law firm) a few weeks ago, and tonight his department is having some annual dinner blah blah...anyway, i have no idea what to wear. i know i'm not the employee, but i'm the wife, and i obviously don't want to reflect badly on my husband. if it were for my work, i'd just wear something i wear to work...but i don't know if this would be different.
so, it's tonight, so i have to make do with what's already in my closet, but i have most basic pieces...can you guys help me? i feel like this is a whole new arena for me and i have completely lost all ability to dress myself...sheesh.
In that situation i always wear black pants, a blazer & pretty shirt / cami underneath - basic, not too flashy, at least until you get the feel for the group. You may discover they are more fun than you thought & then feel more comfortable for the next get together to spice it up a bit, but for a first meeting i'd err on the side of conservative yet pretty. JMO.

ditto on the lbd, as long as it's not too little, obviously. grazing the knee, black heels, strand of pearls, and you're set.
oh and valenciana, never doubt that you'll be fabulous ok? like remember the time you went to visit him during his summer associate gig and you were all nervous about what to wear and then you realized you had a ton of appropriate things already in your closet? i bet this time is just like that one. besides, as soon as you get there, you'll see they're all a bunch of boring lawyers and you'll say to yourself, this is what i was nervous for? puhlease.
