Urban Outfitters...Digging.
Permalink Closed

so i went to urban outfitters the other day and was looking for a lot of less expensive hoodies, tees, etc.. boy, i guess i haven't shopped there in forever because i forgot how much digging you have to do.  the store is soo crammed with tons of tees piled up, not sized, and the tags tucked, that you have to literally look through every tee, pull out the tag, etc...

this is coming from someone who works retail, and is VERY MINDFUL of folding things back, putting everything back on the hanger, etc... i still found it hard to keep their store organized, and i felt that i made a slight mess by the time i left (so i left feeling bad!!).  imagine people who could give two shits about putting things back?!

anyways, i found it was super frustrating.  i had to put down my purse a lot of times to use both hands, plus the people didn't take the items away from you so you had to hold the items that you want to try on, plus dig.  then they didn't have my size so i asked the register lady if they had more, she said probably not.  probably not?  um, do you mind checking cuz the guy in the fitting rooms said you might.  so she called this really nice girl who found  3 out of four of the items.  stupid register girl.

i guess this could go in the rant section, but does anyone else find urban to be annoying to shop at?  unfortunately i will be going to the downtown store later to pick up a hoodie that my store didn't have.  i don't mind stores like tj maxx and marshalls cuz everything is on a hanger and since the items are on sale, i guess i expect you have to dig.  but a place like urban where it's full priced i find it annoying.

yea, i hate that about urban.  At least at Anthro, they sometimes take your clothes.  But i accumulate stuff so fast at Urban, and it gets so heavy...plus the stores are always messy.  I guess they figure they can get away with it since their target market is a little younger.

Are you referring to the one on Clark?  If so, I totally feel your frustration!  I would really hate to work at that Urban because all they do all day/night long is fold, fold, fold.  I always feel the same way as you - like i left things a mess, but oh well.  I don't understand why they don't make more use of their space and hang more clothes up?  I was there last week and I was as equally as frustrated as you, because I too had to keep putting my purse and items down in order to look through things.

I also think most of the people that work at that Urban are super rude.  My bf and I were in there 2 weeks ago - we walked in about 20 mins before closing and I wanted to try a few things on.  The girl in the fitting room gave me a huge attitude about it, and when I came out, I was getting ready to buy a few things...I just went back to one of the displays to get a different color in the pants I wanted and the sales girl actually said "are you almost through because we want to close"  I said I'm just grabbing a pair of pants and checking out..sorry..to which she loudly sighed and rolled her eyes.

I think this girl was way rude, but I completely understand the frustration of having people in the store close to closing. Twenty minutes isn't that bad if you're in and out. But these people that go in 5, 10 minutes before closing and mess up piles and piles of stuff and take their good old time are really irritating. We had this happen last night (they were in the store, in the fitting after closing!) and the manager went over to them and asked them if they needed assistance b/c the store was closed. She wasn't rude about it at all and I think she was within her rights. No one wants to be there into the wee hours and it's very frustrating to have people come in so close to closing and mess up a straightened store and try a bunch of crap on and leave it all over the fitting room.

Not saying you did that, shopchicago33, just saying that it happens and it's annoying. It's just like going into a restaurant a half hour before they close and ordering dinner.  Unless you can order and eat in a half hour, you're going to be keeping someone there past closing and that's just plain rude.  Most people want to go home at the end of their work shift, not have to stay later b/c of some rude customer.

*end rant and thread hijack*

yeah.  but the one a KOP was the same, not as bad, but bad.  i wasn't looking for a job in retail when i was in college, but i just kinda walked in and bcbg was the only place i would apply because i didn't mind if my whole wardrobe was bcbg and because EVERYTHING is on hangers.  i would hate to work anywhere that you had to fold all day.  but i do have to say shame on you for being one of those customers who come in at the last minute!! they shouldn't have made a big deal and at least you bought something!

Teehee. Great minds...

Where I work now doesn't have alot of stuff folded either, which is fabulous. Straightening hangers is much easier than straightening piles of t-shirts (I don't think we even carry t-shirts). Working at AE was the worst b/c they have tons of folded stuff and people would just pull from the bottom of the piles and throw it everywhere. Ugh!

Ok, so I guess i'm a bad girl for coming in 20 mins before closing  however I do want to point out that by the time I was heading to the register, it will still 5 mins before close and their front doors were still wide open - so it's not like they were closed and I was keeping them.  That's what really pissed me off.  If I had been there after the doors were locked and I was keeping them fine, but that was not the case.

I've never really had a problem with Urban. It's little messier, but it's just not Ann Taylor or something so you can't expect it to be really ordered.

i find the best way to shop at urban is to go online and check out the stuff you want. a little prep work goes a long ways towards hassle free shopping in places like that. write down title and brief discription and then find the OLDEST person working in the store to help you (the young ones are in college and could give two shits about helping you find something, the oldest or older person is usually a mangaer and is therefore much more helpful.) I try to only focus on accessories or sweaters at urban. everything else is to hodge podgey piled up will nilly everywhere and usually poor quality. for the funky printed tees that urban carries which i love and are always folded i've had great luck at delias and hot topic getting similar styles and cuts with much less hassle.  Never go to any teeny bopper store (urban, a & f, AE, forever 21 etc) less then 45 minutes before closing they will give you attitude and shitty service. If you do go under the 45 minute rule then don't try anything more then a teeshirt on.  It just isn't worth the hassle from the people who work there. granted they should be there to service you no matter the time or how much you buy but in those places i find it better to follow the rule above and just get the hell out of there then try and complain and change the system.  "older" stores like bannana, ann taylor, neimans, saks etc may secretly be annoyed your there shopping around closing time but will never show it.

Just want to comment on this...I used to work as a manager at AE and never gave anyone shitty service just b/c they were in the store late. However, when customers are in the store close to or past closing and it's almost 10pm,  it's going to cause some irritation. Don't you usually want to go home at the end of your work day? I know I do. And retail is tiring, so by 9:30/10:00pm you start to drag--alot and you just want to go home. The last thing you want is someone coming and messing up a freshly straightened store and then keeping you there for an extra hour to straighten. Remember, these people who work in these stores don't leave as soon as it closes. There is usually at least a 1/2- 1 hour of work to do.  Wouldn't you be upset if someone came up to your desk 20 minutes before you were ready to leave and just threw all of your files and papers everywhere causing you to have to stay an extra 1/2 to clean?  Think about it.  Retail sucks and staying there late into the night sucks even more.

Not a direct attack on you, dewdk, just a general statement.

i have worked retail off and on for years and still work retail at saks 5th avenue.  when coustomers come in  30 minutes before closing at the end of a long day for me i could cheerfully murder them, but i never let it show.

teenybopper stores that have mostly teenyboppers working them with one or two "adults" as managers to keep them in line 45 minutes before closing usually give brusque shitty service while they fly around cleaning the store and begrudingly open fitting rooms for you.  i've had only two (count em) two good experiances in a teeny bopper store 30 minutes before closing and i actually recruited one of those teenagers to work at saks for the summers instead of level 10 her service was so good.

i am not saying it is ALWAYS that way i am saying it is best to follow the 45 minute rule and save oneself the hassle.  perhaps one can be surprised by friendly over the top service at amber. & fitch  30 minutes before closing, but i say why risk it.  follow the 45 minute rule with a little prep work thrown in and your shopping experience is almost guranteed to be hassle free.

plus as you clearly stated you were a manager practically by law forced to be nice no matter the time. try getting a 19 year old home for the holidays from school to help you while they do prep work to shut down their store so they can go hang out with their friends. i am not begruding anyone their personal time. hell i totatly have been there myself and retail is a grinding job on the best of days but good service under those conditions in those kind of stores is just not something i would EXPECT.  i'd just be pleasently surprised if i did get good service and get the hell out of there with my purchases hopefully as quickly as possible.

I got the 19 year olds in my store to act nice...hell, I got the 17 year olds in my store to act nice.  And under my shifts, we had some pretty decent sales at the end of the night, if I do say so myself.
