OMG!  That really was not the time nor place for that statement.

I know this is a serious matter, but the look on Mike Myers' face after Kanye West said that is hilarious.  I had to watch it 10 times.  Maybe it's just late at night.

Can someone explain what this clip is of? It was taking way too long to download so I couldn't watch it. Thanks!

nylabelle -- it's a clip from one of the fundraisers with mike meyers and kanye west, and mike meyers is reading the scripted portions and kanye is kind of saying what he thinks, ending it with the statement "george bush doesn't care about black people." and mike meyers is kind of like "okay then..." with a WTF look on his face.

Sounds like he was just really angry, though that wasn't really the time or place to be discussing it. I think he does have a point, though (edit: not about George Bush, but about the fact that race and/or poverty may have played a part in this whole thing)...hopefully one we can discuss once the immediate process of saving people is completed.

I'm glad he said it. He's right about the way the media has been portraying the white vs. black definition of "looting." It's shameful.

And I'm not saying he's right. I have no clue about Bush's personal feelings towards black people. I'm just glad someone said something out loud because we all know we've been thinking about the issue.

Emotions are running high and maybe he was right to say it or maybe he was wrong to say it but at least he's honest about what he (and probably many others) think.

Agreed.

I think Kanye West always finds a way to say something at the wrong time. Something I would like to ask him if I could though, why doesn't he put his money where his big mouth is? Diddy and Jay Z both gave a million dollars. Funny thing I haven't heard anything about a donation from Kanye West.

Whether race or poverty played a role or not, Kanye West should have tried to act in an appropriate manner when doing a telethon to help the victims.

I wasn't really planning on responding any more to these Hurricane posts but my mom is here in Houston for the weekend and has been telling me what is going on in BR and NO and I felt I needed to post on this topic.

Before the Hurricane hit NO the NO mayor did send city buses into the projects to get those people out and to safety.  They decided not to get on the buses and go to safety.  He threatened them and told them he wasn't risking Police and rescue workers to help them when it flooded.  He would just bring in the body bags and pick up their bodies after it was over.  They still didn't get on the buses and get out.

For anyone to say that the people in NO weren't rescued because they were black needs to go down there and look into all the hotels downtown.  There are tons of tourists that are trapped and dying because it was unsafe for them to go to the superdome for help. They were told to stay in the hotels and they would be rescued later.  Well NO has finished evacuating the superdome, convention center, and hospitals and not the hotels well the white people are!!

Hyatt evacuation

Hotel evacuations

I think Kanye timed his statements perfectly. Making a such a controversial statement during the height of the crisis when everyone is paying attention to the event surely maximizes it's effectiveness. Though personal benefit for Kanye should not be overlooked either, as he's recently released a new album, which will surely experience a spike in sales. That said, I think he made a crucial mistake: George W. Bush doesn't hate black people, he hates poor people.

Kisa I kinda agree with what your saying, but to take it a step further I dont think G.Bush cares about anybody.   He has always focused on his own agenda and sending immediate help to a bunch of poor people isnt going to really benefit him. (At least thats what he thought IMO)

i echo what shankel said. i have always felt that bush's agenda is the top 1%. i don't think of him as a president, but as a businessman.

I also agree with you, erin and shankel.I think of him as a businessman who's business is using his presidency to benefit himself and his associates. To elaborate on my comment about him hating poor people, statistically poor people don't vote, so a man who wants to stay president is going to be more inclined to help rich voters, then poor non-voters.

These are just 2 of the many hotels down there in that area.  The majority of the hotels were not evacuated properly and when the body count comes out it will be shocking.  There are certain agreements in BR and NO with the media with what can and cannot be said that most people don't know what is going on unless you are at a shelter or evacuating people.  I'm just mad at the way the mayor of NO and the Governor of LA are handling this whole issue.

I think that Kanye was not making that statment for his own agend but rather just speaking how he felt because that is the type of person he is and if you listen to alot of his music you can tell that he speaks his mind. As far as people from the "projects" not leaving their homes, they were not the only people that didn't want to leave there were many others that did the same. Also, there is no excuse for how long it took to evacuate the superdome and maybe the ("white people" as you have described as being the people in the hotels which I am here to say I'm sure they weren't the only ones.) But maybe if conditions had been better at the superdome then it would have been better for EVERYONE!

You're right about people still being in the hotels. (My roomie was supposed to get married at the Ritz Carlton in October and she's been talking with some hotel people who say there are still people in most of the hotels in NO.) Since the airports closed down Saturday afternoon, you can imagine it would be really hard for tourists to get out (unless they'd rented a car or something).

That said, I have no idea of the color and/or ethnicity of the people in the hotels. I doubt anyone else does either.

I don't honestly think Bush hates black people. Although he does NOTHING to foster race relations in this country, I can't accuse him of racism because I have nothing to prove that accusation. However, he certainly doesn't keep poor people as his top priority. Even Tucker Carlson (a conservative pundit) admitted the disaster wouldn't be nearly as bad if it had happened to a richer state/area because, as he said, "rich people are more powerful than poor people." Without any kind of doubt, that's true.

I think there are a lot of horrible things and accusations that are going to come from the horrible disaster in New Orleans. I also think (hope) some really wonderful things are going to come from it. It's terrible that something so sad and tragic had to happen to draw attention to some of the basic and fundamental problems in this country. I hope some drastic changes occur and America can be something I can be proud of again.

Actually the second article has to do with the conditions in the hotels that have not been evacuated. If you read it you will understand what I was trying to get across. In addition to the Hyatt, the Fairmont, and all four of Wyndham's New Orleans hotels were evacuated before the superdome. Those are just the hotels that have updated their main page with statements. As for your comments about the mayor of NO, just listen to this.

this is just my personal opinion so please don't flame me, but i think he was way out of line.  it just wasn't the right time or place to say something like that and it didn't do anything to help the people who need it.  obviously he was speaking from his heart and extemporaneously (i've watched the clip a few times, and it definitely was not rehearsed) but he was on a telethon trying to raise money to help.  what he said (i would think) would have a counterproductive effect on fundraising efforts.

ok, and i cannot help but think that kanye west is aware that his new record goes on sale today, and he gave the media one hell of a wicked soundbite to play over and over again.  the man is not stupid--he knew what he was doing.  i can't help but think this is a cheap grab for publicity, and it makes me mad that everyone has taken the bait.
