UPDATE - Ok, i'm really starting to freak out...
Permalink Closed

My mom lives about 50 or so miles from New Orleans so they were also hit by the hurricane & I still haven't heard from her. The phone lines are down, I talked to my Dad (divorced parents) and he lives somewhat near to her, they have no flooding, but of course they are having phone / cell issues. He tried to get to her house which is about 4 miles or so away from him & couldn't because of trees in the road, etc. In my heart I know they are ok because they aren't flooded and the worse that could happen would be a tree in their house or something, but I'm still about to go crazy. I'd just like to hear "we are fine" - you know?

Just thought I'd share since here I am, 500 miles away & can't do a thing but try to call 100 times an hour....I just need to calm down but I just can't....all I get is "all circuits are busy" - I know other people have it so much worse that I feel bad for even being panicked!!!!

UPDATE: I just talked to one of my cousins who saw my mom this morning - they are fine - damage to the roof of our barns (hay & heavy equipment barns) - but other than that everyone is fine. Of course still no phone or electric service. THanks for the encouraging words, I feel much better now.

I'd be freaked out, too.  I'm sure your mom is fine though and will contact you as soon as she can.  Hang in there!

Don't worry about feeling worried. You have every right to be but I'm sure your mom is okay. If your dad is so close and he's okay, then your mom is fine too. You (and them) are in my thoughts.

Let us know when you hear from her!!

That's so scary!  I truly hope your mom is okay.  Hopefully, she will find a way to communicate soon.  Please let us know what happens.  You will be in my thoughts till then.

Try:

To inquire about those in the area who did not evacuate:
American Red Cross, (866) 438-4636.

Thanks, I'll look into it - they are far enough away that they weren't in an evacuation area, so I hate to tie up anyone who could help those that are truly in peril. I also figure they know nothing about this since they have no phone / electric / tv etc. If they had phone access, they'd call me probably, not something like this. But i'm at a loss so anything is worth a try.

THanks for the sweet words ladies, just say a little prayer i guess...

Laken I've been trying for days to get calls through and the only times I can talk to people in LA and MS is when they call me.  Otherwise I get all circuits busy.  Just hang in there and hopefully everything is ok.

You all may have heard this by now, but from what I've heard on the radio, people are finding it much easier to text message someone than to try to call.  You only need a split second of service for a text message to go through.  If you still haven't been able to talk to someone down there, it might be worth a shot.

Laken--I'm so glad your mom is okay.

Good point on the text message - but I know many people (myself included) don't have text message capabilities on their older phones. Neither does my family - they aren't....ummm....technologically advanced in any way, so that wouldn't help in every situation. My grandmother still has a phone with a dial on it!! LOL - she is quite a "country" old lady & doesn't believe in the fancy stuff.

Yeah, I figured it was a long shot, but that it was worth a shot anyway.  I can relate--my dad has had a cell phone for years and he just called me the other day to say that he just learned how to answer it when it rings!  (Which is still pretty pointless because he never has it turned on and hasn't figured out how to check his voicemail.)
