nuchal transparency test?
Permalink Closed

i am 11 wks pregnant (yay!) and debating having this test. i am low risk for down syndrome (i am 27) but it would be a huge relief getting assurance that everything is ok.

i would love to hear some feedback from people who have had this, or know someone who has. thanks!

I had a Nuchal Transluceny done a few weeks ago.  It's just a measurement they take via ultrasound, of the back of the baby's neck.  The baby needs to be in a good position to get an accurate measurement.

Later, at 16 weeks or so you'll probably have a quard screen done (bloodwork) that tests for some genetic disorders too.  Some trests have high false positive rates, but I have not experience this yet, and I am high risk.

AND YAY...I'm so glad it's out there now!  CONGRATS!

Congrats!! I had the test done. To be honest, at the time I didn't realize it was a choice - the dr. told me to get it so matter of factly that I figured it was all part of the process. The more I looked into it the more I realized a lot of women refuse the test. It's really a matter of personal feelings.

A lot of women feel that by the time you get the results (20 weeks) you are half way through the pregnancy - so now what - what if they say there is a good chance there is something wrong with the baby - what do you do? Terminate the pregnancy? Not terminate and worry for the next 20 weeks? Or play the odds and hope the test is wrong (the test doesn't actually tell you if the baby has a problem or not - it just gives you the odds of it.)

I am not at all trying to talk you in or out of it...like I said it's a very personal decision, just wanted to share what I have found on the net in regards to it. That being said, I don't regret getting it done...and (knock wood) hopefully all will be ok.

Oh and A happy and healthy 9 months to you!!!!!!!!

I've certainly never been pregnant or anything, but I don't think I would have it done unless I would possibly terminate the pregnancy. I mean why? Especially cause it doesn't give a definitive answer. But I also think it's a really personal thing.

I agree with this. But I have never been pregnant either. Congrats Erin! You are going to be such a cool mom!

Congrats! Honestly, all the prenatal testing the doctors do is not 100% accurate, and most things that *would* be wrong, would be seen on an ultrasound.  I would have it done just for piece of mine and follow up with your level 2 u/s at 18-20 weeks.

thanks ladies! i think i am going to schedule the test, and take the results with a grain of salt, unless they are really bad. (plus it would be nice to have an u/s now, because i have no idea how far along i really am -- it was just my ob's guesstimation on when i think my last period was)
