bridesmaid question

we are back to square one and sitched the destination wedding idea. we're getting married at a little hall back home that we can get for free (I am so the anti-bride it's not even funny- I still would just rather go to city hall.). Do I have to have a bridesmaid? there's no one that jumps out at me to ask. I would ask my sister but she's too young and my best friends I have only really known for about a yera and I don't know if she consideres me to be one of her best friends so it might be awkward to ask her... I've only been to like 3 weddings in my entire life so I have no idea, is it necessary to have one? do theyactually serve a purpose?

Well, I guess you don't have to have one. It sounds like you are having a small wedding and that you may not be doing a lot of the typicall "wedding" stuff. Usually bridesmaids do things like help plan or throw showers and bachelorette parties. They help you with anything the day of. Ex: carry your purse around, get you mints and drinks, calm you down. I did all the usuall traditional stuff so my bridesmaids did all that stuff and my maid of honor spent the whole day before with me getting our nails done, goofing around, making sure I didn't forget anything. she and the rest of my BM's spent the night the night before and it was just like a fun sleepover. She just kept me calm and made sure I had anything I needed, but she was my best friend of 15 years. Just spend that time with the people who are really care about, if you don't want people you won't feel totally at ease with, then you don't have to get girls to be birdesmaids just for the sake of having them. It's your day, have fun and do what you want!

No, not at all. You can always change your mind anytime. I ended up asking 7 people, and I never thought that would happen, but it is what felt right. Do what you feel most comfortable with.

You're not required to do anything!  It's your wedding!  If you say no bridesmaids, no bridesmaids it is!

thanks, I wasn't sure what the deal with them was. Yeah, we doing a "small" (as small as it get with three huge catholic families- I have a father who dies when I was a baby and then my Dad who raised me and am close with both families) wedding, so not a lot of friends. I would totally ask my sister, but she's only 15 so that would be weird. I have one adult cousin (18), but I am closer to her younger sister than to her. Sucks to be the oldest!!

I read this the other day....this is where the bridesmaid tradition came from. I still think you should do what you want, and have none.

Bridesmaids: Inviting women to be members of your bridal party dates back to ancient times. One Roman custom was to dress the bridesmaids in a fashion similiar to the bride's to confuse evil spirits trying to kidnap the bride. Bridesmaids also had the role of fending off unsuitable suitors, leaving the bride for her groom. Although the specific functions of being a bridesmaid have changed over time, being the brides support system, confident, defender and friend hasn't. And neither has wearing the ugly dress!
