Reliable Plus-size Stockings?
Permalink Closed

The weather is getting cooler earlier this year, and I'm planning on wearing skirts more this winter (yay for easier dresscodes/no lab work!) but my problem is this: I do not like pantyhose. Not one bit. I feel like a sausage, and if I'm wearing anything with a waist band where the hose sit, I feel like I'm being chopp in half. But I loves me some garter belts, and stockings. The problem I'm having is that my stockings usually tear when I hook them, or after 1 or 2 wearings.

So far, I've bought a belt from Torrid that seems to be holding up, and stockings from Torrid, and I have some with no tag in them, but I think they were from Fredericks. I have not tried Hips & Curves yet, becuase my thinking is that I'd have to buy another garter belt? The hooks on thiers do not look like mine. I'm actually kind of new to them, to be honest, but they are way far more comfy that pantyhose/tights.

Anyone ever tried this before? My skirts are to the knee, or slightly below. Is there antthing special I'd need to do to wear boots over them? Any suggestions for sturdier stockings?

What do the fasteners on yours look like, compared to the ones you saw at Hips & Curves? Most garter belt have similar fasteners.

Hi Kelly,
My clips are little plastic slides (not actual clips). The ones at H&C for the most part are metal clips--could that be the issue? I had good stockings but not a good belt? This is the closest picture approximation I can find:

and H&C has ones like these:
here

The plastic clips aren't catching hold and keeping ahold, and when I refasten, they tear.

I think those are pretty much the same thing, just one is plastic and one is metal. Metal clips still have a flexible back so you can slide it. There are garter belts with actual clips (like http://lingerie.lovetoknow.com/image/40404~Garter_belt_istock.jpg) but I've actually never tried those, I stick with the "slides"

Personally I wear belts with metal clips, because the plastic ones can break pretty easily and don't hold the stocking as firmly. FWIW I like the belts from Secrets In Lace, like http://www.secretsinlace.com/product/29/Garter_Belts

I can't think of anything specific you'd have to do to wear boots with stockings, except that I usually wear boot socks over my stockings - it's warmer and it protects my stockings from boot zippers, which are evil and will snag!
