I don't know why, but a couple of weeks ago, I sort of stopped eating dairy products. It was sort of unintentional, but then I started to notice that I've been feeling a lot better. I've been less bloated and congested, and overall I've felt "cleaner", if that makes sense. I was never lactose intolerant, but I think that giving up dairy has been very good for me.
My question is does anyone here also refrain from dairy? Do you guys think its safe to cut back on dairy? I'm definetly concerned that I won't be getting enough calcium, so I wanted to know what other food products I can get it from. I know brocolli has a lot of calcium, but do you know any other fruits or veggies that have it? Also, I'm going to start testing out soy products, and I want any suggestions for good brands that you guys like. I guess I'm looking for a soy milk that tastes similar to regular milk, but I'm sure that I'll eventually get used to the taste of soy milk and it won't seem different to me anymore.
8th Continent Vanilla Soy. It's the smoothest soy milk I've tasted, and it's good for drinking alone or in cereal.
I developed a little lactose intolerance when I worked in an ice cream parlor. If you want to stick with giving it up, and are worried about calcium, just take calcium supplements that contain vitamin D. I like the Viactiv ones, but you can also just take a pill you swallow.
I have never given up dairy but I do know lots of people who have and claim to feel better. I get worried about my calcium intake too but you can safely go without dairy products and still get enough. I did recently switch to using soy milk in my cereal and while I haven't had any that taste like regular milk it is something that you get used to really quickly. I second the 8th continent recommendation but I've had lots of other brands and have been pleased with all of them. You can also look for enriched soy milk which I think has more calcium and vitamins.
Good sources of calcium are leafy green vegetables like spinach and cale and almonds.
i eat wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much dairy. i just love ice cream and cheese too much to stop- but i switched my milk for 8th continent soy milk (so i echo the others on here with that brand) which has helped some.
also, i take a calcium supplement once a day as well.
I am vegan (a vegetarian, and in addition I don't eat eggs or dairy either). I really feel better since I stopped eating dairy, but the calcium issue concerns me a bit... First, note that many foods you might already eat are enriched with calcium, such as orange juice and cereals. Also, green leaf vegetables are sources of calcium, the green has to be dark, such as in kale.
