phone interviews

i've just started job hunting (current job is slowly killing me and all my brain cells) and i'm working with some good recruiters.  they got me a phone interview with an advertising agency and the job sounds like it has a lot of potential.  this particular agency looks awesome- their clients include honda, safeway, the australia tourism board, the dodgers, nestle, etc.  i want to make a great impression.

i've only had one phone interview before (about 2 years ago) and it was a disaster.  i feel like you're at such a disadvantage when you're not face to face with your interviewer, you know?  interviews are nerve-wracking enough, but over the phone it's even harder to gauge how it's going.

anyone have any tips?  i'd appreciate any help.  thanks so much!

Well, speak slowly so they understand you. They know you have to think about your answers so don't spat something out as fast as you can without thinking about it. If you need a little time to think, just repeat the question they asked to let them know you are processing it.
EX: "What are your strongest skills?"
You: "Let's see, I would have to say my stronges skills would be...."

DO NOT PACE while you are on the phone. When I am nervous on the phone I tend to pace and not even notice it, but it makes me get a little out of breath because I am nervous and excited and then it's hard to talk. So find a comfy place to sit without things that will distract you or make you fidget. Have a pen and paper in case you want to write things down, notes about the job or things you think of and want to remember to say.

Before the interview make notes of things you want them to know about you (skills, education, personality) or about the job so in case you blank you have small reference notes. (This is a good idea, but just be careful not to make this obvious, like you might be reading from a list)

Make sure you are in a place where there won't be noise (outside or by a tv) or where someone might barge in and make a lot of noise.

That is about all I can think of for now. Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

thanks!  this is a great point.  i hadn't even thought of that, but you're right, pacing would be a bad thing.

Luv2Shop had a lot of great tips.

The one tip I have is to make sure you have your resume right in front of you when you're on the call. I've had quite a few phone interviews (all of which led to face-to-face versions, thankfully) and my resume has always bailed me out, especially when I couldn't think of the way I wanted to word an answer or if I got stuck.

Don't worry, you'll do great!

thanks for the tips and encouragement, girls!  i had my interview a few hours ago and it went really well!  my interviewer said that i'm exactly what they're looking for...yay!  the position sounds like an amazing opportunity.  i should hear early next week if they want to interview me in person.  (i think they'll call me back- i was very encouraged by my interviewer!)

thanks again!
