I read Pride and Prejudice for a class in college. I absolutely loved it- but then again I'm a big Jane Austen fan. I can't wait to see the movie starring Keira Knightley. I saw the BBC version and was kind of disappointed because I was probably expecting too much. Count me in on the discussions though. I will have to go on what I do remember. I don't know if I still have the book or not.

On a side note, I read through every page of War and Peace ( I took a Russian Lit class in college) and found the war scenes to be quite tedious, as well as keeping track of all the characters. But the class discussions made me appreciate all the novel's intricacies more. I think the imagery is just beautifully written and Tolstoy can be quite humorous at times. It really helps to be discussing the book with people as you read it.

Yay! I just finished this book on my trip last week.  I love it!! I can't wait to start talking about it. I'm a Mr. Darcy lover too.  Haven't seen the Colin Firth movie version yet but I really want to.  FYI they are releasing yet another P&P film version in the movie theatres this fall.

Here's the trailer if you want to see it. I'm a little alarmed at the thought of Keira Knightly playing Lizzie. Jane (the older sister) is supposed to be the beautiful one. Not to say Lizzie is ugly or anything but she's never described in Keira Knightly terms. I hope they don't jack with it too much. I loved the BBC version - it's really one of the best books to film I've ever seen.

Thanks bluebirde! Now I am totally open to seeing this  movie. I am still not buying another Mr.Darcy but I think Donald Sutherland will be great as Mr.Bennett.

I am completely appalled at the idea of Keira Knightley playing Lizzy. Lizzy was witty and smart and Keira Knightley is ... well, let's just say I am not a big fan. I stood idly by while she "starred" with my precious Adrien (Brody) in that jacket movie (somehow didn't absorb much about the *actual movie*) but this is going too far. I might have to mount a protest or something outside the theatre. Humph.

I thought she was so wonderfully delightlyful in Love Actually. After she moved from minor player to "hot, young thing," she lost some of her appeal. I don't hate her or anything, I just don't think she has the chops to pull off Lizzie. We'll see, shall we?

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I want to say that I loved White Teeth & Middlesex. Kite Runner is next on my list.

i loved all three!  i thought white teeth was hilarious at times- love zadie smith's style.  she has such a unique voice.  middlesex had its humorous moments too, although it struck me as more of a comedic tragedy/tragicomedy, however you wanna say it.  i also felt like the ending was forced/rushed- we got all this background knowledge on the family throughout the three generations (which i loved) and then it ended a little abruptly.  i wish the author had explored more of callie/cal's life after he made the decision to live as a male.  i wanted it to be more of a coming-of-age story.  we got some of that, but not enough, in my opinion.  (sorry if i just spoiled the book for somebody!  it's about a hermaphrodite and you know that within the first paragraph, so i guess i didn't really ruin it.  definitely read the kite runner.  it is so well-written and just heartbreaking....

eta: sorry for hijacking the thread, book clubbers!
