How to get rid of a.......

....couch?  We recently bought a new couch.  I scheduled a pick-up with the Salvation Army to donate our old one.  We took it to the curb last night b/c the truck was supposed to come this morning to pick it up.  Well, I woke up and there was a letter taped to my door stating that my couch was "deemed unwanted" by the Salvation Army!!!!!!  What the heck?!?!?!?!?!??!?


We bought this couch from the Salvation Army ~2 years ago for $100.  It is in amazing condition!  How can an organization that survives on donations refuse my couch?


Anyway, so now I have this horrible problem - what do I do with it?  I posted on craigslist as soon as I got to work.  I am scared that when I get home from work it will still be sitting on the curb.  I don't want to get my neighbors upset with me for "junking" up the block.


Does anyone have an idea?  I have the smallest car in the world (honda civic, 2 door), so taking it somewhere would not really be an option for me.

I would call Salvation Army - as far as I know, they don't refuse things as a company policy.  Call and ask what the deal is - you could have just had a lazy truck driver!

call a women's shelter...they may take it, too.  You could always do what my husband & his roommate used to do in college -- wait for a weekend and put it out there with a sign that says "free."  Also, a few times a year, your city should have bulk trash pickup...can you keep it somewhere until then?

I have had Salvation Army reject furniture before. Maybe it varies by state?? But yah I think Craig's List was a great idea. That's how we got rid of our old couch.

I called the Salvation Army, and I guess that pick up is fully at the "driver's discretion".  And I honestly believe the driver just didn't want to pick up the couch b/c it is very very large.


Anyway, I called several churches, a local women's shelter, and a local thrift store and nobody wants to come pick it up.  This is so sad.  It is a perfectly good couch.

maybe try advertising at colleges?  i know schools out right now but there might be people milling around that will see a flyer if you post it somewhere noticeable.  aw, so sorry this happened, girl!  that totally sucks!  oh & halleybird had a good idea w/ the "bulk trash pickup".  i'm pretty sure if you go online for ur city they should have info about it.  good luck!!!

If it is a good couch as you say, I would take a picture of it and send an e-mail to somebody imortant like the head of Salvation Army. I then would tell them about an organization that depends on donated items shouldn't refuse a good used couch!  I'd let them know they had a driver that was too lazy to load it in the truck and they should investigate this employee.

I had to get rid of a couch lst yr.I posted in the classified as "free"- I didn't have to pay for the listing and it was gone in no time!

while i don't doubt your couch is in good condition i know that the salvation army is extremely picky about donations, especially when they pick them up (you can pretty much drop off whatever). i think the main reason for this is b/c they make money by re-selling your stuff, so it's not only a question of if the couch is in good condition, but if they can re-sell it. and based on your description ( i know you said it's in good condition but you got it from the salvation army, so it's essentially on it's 2nd, maybe 3rd ownder) it might not be worthwhile for them to take it.


i would just place an ad on craig's list for a free couch if you pick it up. i'm sure it'll be gone in no time.

hey tara, i know i'm lame, but i actually decided to search for your ad just for the heck of it.  it was lilykind's idea!!  anyways, i couldn't find it.  did u say it's free?  i found one on there that said "free, just pick it up" but it was studio city & i think it was posted too long ago to be from you.  maybe try that tho, and did you post pictures w/ your ad?  pictures totally increase the interest.  i sold my mom's car using craigslist & it worked great!  good luck!!

Thanks guys for your help!  I guess I was worried for no reason.....by the time I got home from work, my couch was gone!  My really crappy desk was gone too (I am shocked by this).


I am really glad that someone got my couch and I didn't have to just trash it.  It makes me feel warm and fuzzy......


Oh, and crystal - my b/f posted it on craig's list under the "free" category.  I don't know why it didn't show up - weird.
