how the heck do you find a job?

I can't even find anything that looks like it's worth applying to! I am interested in getting into PR/public affairs/advertising but evey listing I find is either for an administrative assistant (yeah, it would be a foot in the door but I have 3 years of being an assistant and I am sick of it) or is from some shady looking company that exclaimes "no expeirence necessary! will train!"- to me, these don't look like real jobs and I don't even want to bother with them (unless someone here knows them to be otherwise). Am I looking for the wrong thing? In the wrong places? Is there no other entry-level type position other then being an office assistant

I am so frustrated with this whole process.

Be careful of those, 'no experience necessary' ads! They are awful. I went to an interview for one of those and it's a total scam! Completely shady.

Not that I'm anyone to talk about finding a job, but I've been looking for so long that I feel like I've seen alot! I've found that the 'marketing/advertising/pr' sections in monster and the like are chock full 'o crap!  Alot of the jobs that they lump into marketing are actually sales or scams or assistant positions.

I would break out the phone book and check the listings for ad agencies and PR agencies in your area. Also a lot of big cities have local chapters of PRSSA (Public Relations...I can't remember what the rest stands for, but anyway).  You could check that, too. I know in Philly, there is Phillyadclub for advertising (I just found out about that one!).  Craigslist is usually decent and has less crap to filter through than monster.

i know this is different, so take it for what it's worth, but with hospitals, you apply directly to the one you want.  i know with my bf's career, accounting, you also apply directly to the company you want, my brother is banking, he applied directly to the bank, etc...you get my point....i know with my career, with my bf's, and my brother's, the companies that advertise are not companies worth working for.  also, a lot of companies like that don't place ads. in the paper, they may hold your resume if they don't need people immediately, and contact you at a later time.  so, maybe try finding companies you want to work for and contact them directly.

one more thought that i'll take from my dad who's a dentist:  "you don't want a dentist who advertises.  good dentists don't need to advertise"

i feel the same about most professions.  hairstylists, plastic surgeons (my friend's breast augmentation definitely is proof that you don't want plastic surgeons who advertise), lawyers, etc...

good luck with your search, i know you are super frustrated with your career right now.

network netwpok network....

my friend recently quit her job with no interviews or anything lined up.  her last day was last friday, she moved home sunday and has had 3 interviews already.  all because people knew she was looking and passed her name along.

i also think it helps the longer you have been in the game... as my friends are working on their 2nd or 3rd jobs, it gets easier and easier for them to find new opportunities b/c of their experience...

good luck!  and let everyone you know that you are looking for a new job!!!
