A Question About Resume

What is an appropriate time period for a resume?  My boyfriend is sending his resume out and I looked over it.  He has a civil service position listed that ended six years ago.  Is that too old?  He has it listed because it is part of his civil service history and represents strong discipline and leadership skills.  Please, any thoughts?

Hmmm, I'm going to say it might be too old - but it depends - how many other jobs is he listing on his resume?

He has four jobs and two activities (his civil service positions) listed.

If it is relevant to the positions he is applying for then I would leave it on there.  If it isn't adding anything then you might want to take it off.

I agree with this. I have internships listed on my resume that are from almost 4 years ago, but b/c they are relevant to the job I'm seeking, I keep them on there and I'll keep them on there until I find a job in my field.

I agree too.  If its relevant, then experience is experience--it doesn't matter how long ago it was.

I agree with the forum, if the skills he has listed are relavant, an employer will want to see it.


If you can take it off, those skills used in this position would be perfect under the "Qualifications" heading on a resume.  I actually just discovered this heading (stupid me). It helps bring your headlining qualifications to the top and then you just list your jobs and responsibilities under "experience". You need every edge you can get!

I've done hiring in the past, and I like to see a work record on the resume going back at least 10 years (if the person is old enough to have that much experience, of course), or back to college graduation, if they have a degree and then work experience after it. Older jobs don't need much detail, though, just the position information and one or two lines, unless there are skills there that aren't illustrated in later positions.
