Thrift Store Finds
Permalink Closed

For those of you who read my unfortunate thrift store story of the shirt I passed up, I did end up getting some great deals & wanted to share, now that I can actually talk about that day again, w/o breaking down

I got a dark brown suede double breasted pea coat for a $1:

This is the back side, its hard to see, but I like the button & tail detail in the back:

And this straw bag for $1:

Man I love a bargain -and you win for sure!!! How cute is that jacket? I liek the purse too, but that jacket is the find of the century. You know when people compliment you on it you'll have to say "oh this, I got it for $1" LOL - at least I'd have to say that!

I have to ask though - when you say thrift store - do you go to Goodwill type places? Or do you have resale shops in your area? Because of the $1 factor I'm assuming Goodwill / Salvation Army?

I know you probably don't want to give up your source, but i was just curious.

I was wondering what type of place you go to also.  Please describe I know they are probably local places but I want to know what to look for in a good thrift store.

Dang, I feel super super cheap saying this, but Goodwill is expensive.  The other day Mom and I thrifted at a local charity shop.  We filled a grocery cart (!!) for $10.  Then, we stopped by GW and it seemed so rediculous to pay $4 for a shirt.  Hell, I can find a brand new $4 shirt at Target!  Anyway, I was all, "Ugh, this place is expensive!"  Mom goes, "Really?  Cos I'm pretty sure we're at GOODWILL."  I felt kind of retarded.  Funny stuff, anyway.  Praps you had to be there!

Darn, My computer crashed when I hit the submit button, so I'm re-typing this again:

Thanks for all the compliments,   I'll be happy to share my secrets.  I try to limit my visits to Goodwill/Sal. Army because they remind me of a mass-merchandiser chain such as Target, Macy*s, etc.  They are well known places & most people go there a lot.  When I find something good there I take it & run, but most of the time I find icky weird stuff.

That said, I visit a privately owned small thrift store in the 'old-town' side of where I live.  My mom used to take my bro & me to buy books when we were kids.  I recently started going back because I was on a "mission" to decorate my daughter's nursery on a budget.  I remembered when I was little I used to think they had a lot of old lady stuff.  Well now, Old lady stuff translates into vintage, classic finds so I started stopping by.  My best finds were wood toy box I re-did & vintage vanity stool there for $5 each! (see pics below)

I recommend visiting the older parts of the town or city you live in or the lower income parts of town because you'll find small thrift stores owned by retirees that knew their stuff back in the day & sell at dirt cheap prices. They don't pay for advertising because people are always walking by on their way to the bus stop or market.  I also shop on Friday's or early Saturday because they have great sales.   HTHs everyone!

Wow, I imagined thrift stores to be filled with $1 t-shirts.  But you're right, I found shirts at Target for $2..  but I haven't been to one in a while.  I know someone who works at one and he said that stuff that doesn't sell at Target gets donated there, so I need to check them out sometime.  Especially if there's potential to find such a beautiful $1 jacket!  Plus, I always have urges to go out and shop, not neccessarily buy things.. Can't believe this just occured to me now!

rica, i totally get annoyed with some thrift store prices! not as much at goodwill as this one by my house that i find overprices things. (ie shoes will start at 2$ but i saw a pair of shoes there for 100$. i'm like this is a thrift!) i kind of like how goodwill has standard prices rather than ranges.
