Sorority Rush

Hello Everyone,

I have been reading this forum for quite some time now, but this is my first post. I am hoping some of you ladies can help me. My boyfriend's little sister is going through formal rush at the University of Missouri this fall. She has asked me to help her shop for her clothes. She needs a skirt/top outfit (church appropriate) and a nice dress (day wedding appropriate). There are about 900 girls going through rush so she needs something that stands out but is comfortable to wear all day and not fuss with while she is getting to know the houses. If anyone has any suggestions I would be most grateful. I would hate to steer her in the wrong direction. Thank you for your help!

Hi.  Dressing for Rush all depends on what the girls at that school dress like and how showy they are.  At my old school -LSU- anything from Express or BR would work because that is where everyone shops and we don't have anything better than a Dillards or Foley's here.  I think someone went through rush at Auburn last year on here and they bought only dresses from Nordstrom and Neimans because that is how their rush was and how everyone dressed there.

Honestly with 900 other girls going through rush the only thing that would make her stand out is to dye her hair blue which I wouldn't recommend.  The trick to rush is to try to figure out what everyone else wears so you can kinda mimic it and show that you can fit in with their image (we were extremely picky on whether or not to cut someone if they didn't fit our "image"). If everyone shops at Anthro you better at least get a couple of things from there or if they all boutique shop you should do the same. You don't want to wear polka dots to your favorite house if they all wear stripes you know.

Make sure she has a cute purse that is large enough for a small umbrella.  It is not fun to get caught in the rain without an umbrella plus you don't wanna be carrying it around on your arm.  Marshalls always has Nicole Miller and Lulu Guiness umbrellas on sale and they are small.

Shoes - must be comfy!! The lower the heel the better. I would recommend a heel vs. a flat just because everyone else probably will be in heels too and the sorority girls will definetly be in heels.  Tell her to keep some bandaids in her purse.  She will probably need them even if she has worn the shoes for years

Dress- A lot of girls would come to rush in strapless dresses. Just seems to be the trend so if she can wear them you might want to check that style out. I know they were so popular a few years ago my house changed one of our outfits to be matching strapless dresses from Express.

a bunch of my friends went to mizzou so i have been there a bunch of times.  the first time i came back after being on the east coast for college, i wore jeans, a nice laundry chiffon top, and nice heels...i can't really pin-point what it was, but i felt like i stuck out a bit.  from what i remember about columbia (the town it's in), it only has like an express, and like the standard mall stores.  i think if she just finds a nice dress, that's not from express, limited, or any of the other stores that most of the girls in columbia shop at, she'll be fine. also, from what i remember, a lot of girls there don't wear a ton of prints.  so maybe a printed top with a skirt if she wants to stick out.  wedges would be comfy and offer some height.

i think the best accessory that she can use to stick out is her personality.  (kinda cheesy i know).

I would recommend she get some cute accessories for rush for two reasons:  1)  Something unique will help make her stand out more in the other girls memories and 2)  it will give her or the other girl something to talk about other than "Hi, so tell me, where are you from?" which she'll hear OVER and OVER and OVER again.  A cool purse or shoes or necklace might help break the ice and get a more natural conversation going.  (Ex:  "Hi, cute necklace."  "Thanks, I got it while on vacation in Uzbekistan."  "Oh cool, I've been to Uzbekistan too!" etc etc

Comfy shoes are a must, as are bandaids, as lsubatgirl suggested.  Is your bf's sister going to be a freshman, or a sophomore?  If she's a freshman, she might want to go poke around campus before shopping so she can get an idea of the styles that the girls there wear.

I think once we get an idea of her body type and coloring, we'll be able to be of more help.

You guys are awesome. Thank you so much for being so helpful. She is going to be really excited when I tell her about all of your great responses. She is a going to be a Freshman. She is about 5'1" and 120 lbs and is about a D cup. So, she is kind of curvy. She has medium toned skin and dark shoulder length hair with brown eyes. She still looks really young and is not exactly a tomboy, but is not exactly confident in her style quite yet. She is really open to any ideas. I know she wants to make a great impression. Thanks again for all of your wonderful responses!
