I'm listing quite a few items of clothes tonight, and I need some help w/ shipping. How do you figure out how much the item will cost to ship? Do you box it up and weigh it before you post your auction? For auctions w/ one item, I guess I'll just use Priority Mail flat rate bags, but what about lots that won't fit into them? I've screwed myself over before by under-estimating the shipping costs, so that's scared me away from selling a little.
If you use priority mail, the boxes are free. That is a big help. Think of it as shipping and handling though. I know you want to have competitive shipping rates, but these days $10 is nothing for shipping. I usually put $7.00. I've only once or twice had it go over, and that was shoes that weighed more.
on my listings i did $6 and offered combined shipping. $6 is usually enough to cover most items sent through priority mail assuming it's one item per envelope.
I've sold clothes on ebay before and been screwed by shipping. So, I started using the shipping calculator. You know the amount of clothes you are selling, so you can estimate how big a box you'd need and the approximate weight. Then I add about a pound just to be sure and then a buyer can't complain if it's too much $ because it's actual shipping costs. Also, if you use ups.com you can print out labels and save A LOT of money. I mean A LOT. I shipped about 15 pounds of clothes and purchased online and spent only $11. Not bad....
